Happy Birthday, Simpsons!

simpsonsthenandnow-9402454

It was twenty years ago today, Homer Simpson taught the land to strangle his son.

On April 19, 1987 The Tracey Ullman Show aired a two-minute animated short by Matt Groening that introduced the world to the Simpsons, a family from Springfield, USA. And, quite literally, television has never been the same. The Simpsons has gone on to become one of the longest continuously-aired television shows in American history. What had been seen as "good grief, look what they’re shoveling onto the children now" has become one of the most honored and most respected shows of all time.

More Marvel video games

pixelavengers-4857502

If you’re going to appear in a Marvel movie, you might as well try to get into the video games as well.

Marvel Entertainment has expanded its deal with Sega Europe and Sega of America, under which they will develop and distribute games based on Marvel’s upcoming feature films, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America, and Thor.  This new exclusive, multi-year licensing deal follows Marvel and Sega’s pact to create game titles based on Marvel’s upcoming Iron Man movie, with both game and movie set for release in May 2008.

Robotech Returns – Old and New

UPDATE: Jamie Bishop

Often inspired by his artistic superheroes Dave McKean, Frank Miller, Diane Fenster, and the ever-groovy René Magritte, Jamie enjoyed creating digital art. Recent work includes book covers for his father Michael Bishop’s Brighten to Incandescence and A Reverie for Mister Ray as well as Mike Jasper’s now ironically-named short story collection Gunning for the Buddha.

Despite a penchant for art, Jamie received both his B.A. and M.A. in German at the University of Georgia. Between 1993 and 2000 he lived for four years in Germany where he spent most of his time, in his words, "learning the language, teaching English, drinking large quantities of wheat beer, and wooing a certain Fräulein," Dr. Stefanie Hoder, who would later become his wife.

Jamie’s art portfolio, along with a dated version of his biography, can be found at http://www.memory39.com/, which is also the name of the piece of art above. The Los Angeles Times has an article about Jamie here.

Jamie Bishop killed at Virginia Tech

It just came to our attention that science fiction author Michael Bishop (Count Geiger Blues) just lost his son, Jamie, in the recent massacre at Virginia Tech. Jamie was a German language teacher.

Our condolences go out to Michael, his wife Geri, and the rest of his family.

Edward Norton as Bruce Banner

incrediblehulk315-100-1033245Step-sibling Cinematical (say that three times fast) is reporting that: "Bruce Banner and his massive green alter ego will be played by Oscar nominee Edward Norton! Best known for his superlative work in movies like Primal Fear, Rounders, American History X and Fight Club (oh, and Death to Smoochy), Norton steps into a role vacated by Bana — and I for one think it’s a really excellent choice on the part of [Louis] Leterrier and his Universal overlords."

Who’s on top again?

With the Doctor Who episode, "Gridlock", airing last night in the UK, the show has retaken the lead from Star Trek with 727 produced episodes over a 44 year history, exceeding all of the Star Trek series combined. Well done, lads and ladies.

GLENN HAUMAN: Arguments should be good

CBRJoe Rice disgraces himself and Comic Book Resources with one of the worst cases of paralogia and argumentum ad hominem I’ve seen since the Peter David/Todd MacFarlane Great Debate. His argument can be reductiod to the following absurdum:

  1. I like Fantagraphics products.
  2. Harlan Ellison is suing Fantagraphics for reasons I don’t even pretend to address or understand.
  3. Therefore, Harlan Ellison is a "petty old sci-fi writer" and "a tired old hack" and he’s suing because "in truth, because his widdle feewings were hurt at how they descwibed him".

Yes, Joe, comics should be good– and so should your arguments. I didn’t think there could be a Rice who could make worse arguments than Condoleezza…

Happy birthday, McDonald’s

mcdonalds-6459882comicbookguy128-9034416Fifty-two (there’s that number again) years ago today, the first McDonald’s franchise opened up in Des Plaines, IL, just north of Chicago’s O’Hare Airport.

It’s still there, but now it’s a museum – complete with 1955 cars in the parking lot.

On behalf of what you’ve done for the bodies of millions of comic book fans across America, we’d just like to say: Thanks heaps.
