Carmine Infantino: 1925-2013

carmine-art-7578704Carmine Infantino, the legendary artist, editor, and co-creator of the Black Canary, the Barry Allen Flash, Elongated Man, Deadman, Human Target, and Batgirl, and onetime publisher of DC Comics has passed away at the age of 87.

Carmine was born in his family’s apartment in Brooklyn, NY, on May 24, 1925. He started working for comics packager Harry A. Chesler during his freshman year of high school at the School of Industrial Art. His early career included stints on Airboy, The Heap, Johnny Thunder, the Golden-Age Green Lantern and Flash, and the Justice Society of America.

In 1956, Julius Schwartz teamed Carmine with Robert Kanigher to attempt to revive superheroes by creating a new version of the Flash in Showcase #4, an event which marked a beginning of the Silver Age of Comics. Carmine designed the streamlined look of the series, down to the familiar red and yellow costume. He also had famous runs on Adam Strange and Batman, ushering in the “New Look” in Detective Comics #327, complete with yellow oval around the Bat-symbol on his chest.

In late 1966/early 1967, Carmine was tasked by Irwin Donenfeld with designing covers for the entire DC line. Stan Lee learned of this and approached Carmine with a $22,000 offer to move to Marvel. DC Publisher Jack Liebowitz confirmed that DC could not match the offer, but instead promoted Carmine to the position of art director. When DC was sold to Kinney National Company in 1967, Infantino was promoted to editorial director, where he made artists Joe Orlando, Joe Kubert and Mike Sekowsky editors. New talents such as artist Neal Adams and writer Dennis O’Neil were brought into the company, and in 1970, Carmine signed on Marvel Comics’ star artist and storytelling collaborator, Jack Kirby, to a DC Comics contract.

Carmine was made DC’s publisher in early 1971, during a time of declining circulation for the company’s comics, and he attempted a number of changes. In an effort to raise revenue, he raised the cover price of DC’s comics from 15 to 25 cents, simultaneously raising the page-count by adding reprints and new backup features. In January 1976, Warner Communications replaced Carmine with magazine publisher Jenette Kahn, and he returned to freelance work, doing Spider-Woman, Star Wars, and Nova for Marvel and numerous stories for the Warren family of comics magazines. He returned to DC in 1981 on the Flash, Supergirl, Red Tornado, Dial “H” For Hero, and the Batman syndicated newspaper strip.

In 2004, he sued DC for rights to characters he alleged to have created while he was a freelancer for the company, including Kid Flash, Iris West, Captain Cold, Captain Boomerang, Mirror Master, Gorilla Grodd, the Elongated Man, and Batgirl. He wrote and contributed to two books about his life and career: The Amazing World of Carmine Infantino and Carmine Infantino: Penciler, Publisher, Provocateur. He appeared at conventions promoting these books up to the end of 2012.

Carmine was often quoted as saying his favorite character was Detective Chimp.

He won numerous awards over the years, including the National Cartoonists Society Award in 1958 for Best Comic Book and eleven Alley Awards, plus a special Alley Award in 1969 for being the person “who exemplifies the spirit of innovation and inventiveness in the field of comic art”.

ALL PULP TO CLOSE END OF THIS WEEK!

Approximately four weeks ago, Tommy Hancock, one of the original founding members of All Pulp as well as Editor in Chief, announced that he was stepping down from All Pulp, except as an incidental contributor.  At that point, Hancock stated that the position of Editor in Chief was open if anyone was interested in taking it on.  Although some have considered it, none have come forward.

“Based upon the fact,” Hancock says in a statement today, “that the Editor in Chief position at All Pulp remains open and that the site will not function in the same capacity at all without not only a body, but an active person in that position, I must announce today that, unless that position is filled by Saturday, April 6th, 2013, All Pulp will cease operation.”
Anyone interested in the position of Editor in Chief of All Pulp should contact Hancock at allpulp@yahoo.com or proseproductions@earthlink.net or at 870-834-4022.

PRO SE ANNOUNCES SUBMISSION INFORMATION FOR 2013 AND BEYOND!

psppaposter-2771594
Pro Se Productions, a leader in Genre and New Pulp Fiction, announces today that as of April 1, 2013, no further unsolicited novel or collection submissions will be set for publication in 2013.
“The reason is,” Tommy Hancock, Partner in and Editor in Chief of Pro Se Productions explained, “we simply have more than enough Genre goodness scheduled to come out this year.  Pro Se has truly become a force as an independent press and a large part of that has to do with the writers and staff that have already had work published and/or developed with Pro Se.     The quality of work that Pro Se puts out has brought an unprecedented amount of submissions to our door, many of those from authors, both established and new, who know of Pro Se’s reputation and want their work with us.  We definitely want the best in Genre Fiction under our banner as well, but there comes a point to where you have to be fair to everyone involved, including the company itself.  So, Pro Se is not closing submissions, but we are not scheduling any other unsolicited works for publication in 2013.”
“As for 2014,” Hancock stated, “that calendar is filling up quickly as well, both with new works as well as follow up novels to existing Pro Se material.   We intend to publish an unprecedented amount of books this year, but do not intend to repeat that next year necessarily.  So, although space is open for 2014, we also already have books on our 2015 schedule as well.”
Hancock states that this is not a typical closing of submissions.  “We’ve had a lot of inquiries,” he stated, “as many as two a week in the last two months.  And it’s simply come up that we feel it necessary to establish that although we’re very much interested in reviewing your novel or collection for publication with Pro Se, we also have to be honest and up front about when your book will likely see print.”
Any projects accepted prior to April 1, 2013, Hancock stated, are still scheduled for dates provided in private correspondence, if such dates have been set.  This announcement does not affect any project that has been accepted by Pro Se prior to April 1, 2013.
Hancock also emphasized that this does not include stories for the now quarterly PRO SE PRESENTS Magazine.  “You can send in stories if you’re seeking publication in the magazine and they will, upon acceptance, be send to Lee Houston, Jr., the managing editor of the magazine, and then scheduled for inclusion.”
“This also,” Hancock maintained, “does not include calls for submissions made by Pro Se for anthologies or future works.   If we put out the call, most definitely we seek submissions for that specific work.”
All submissions as of April 1, 2013 will need to be sent to Morgan Minor, Director of Corporate Operations for Pro Se at Tommyhancockpulp@yahoo.com.  Morgan then will start each proposal/manuscript through the submission process within Pro Se.
Pro Se reminds all potential authors that submission standards are as follows-
Story must be Pulp in Style, regardless of Genre
Single Spaced, Double Between Paragraphs
Times New Roman, 12 point type
No paragraph indentions
Five Asterisks (*****) between scene breaks
Submissions must include Name, Contact information, and Word Count.
For any questions concerning submissions, please email Morgan Minor at Tommyhancockpulp@yahoo.com.

Saturday Morning Cartoons: #KickstartCobra!

300px-cobra_command_logo-svg_1-7815166

Help non-profit organization COBRA rebuild its home and base of operations, Cobra Island, which was destroyed by GI JOE.

We are COBRA, a worldwide organization devoted to making advancements in science and defense technology.

Recently our home and secret base of operations was destroyed in an attack by the terrorist militia known as GI JOE.
So after discussing a plan of action with my colleagues DESTRO, DR. MINDBENDER, and our business analysts TOMAX and XAMOT, we reached the conclusion that we need $94 billion to fully restore COBRA ISLAND and the COBRA organization.
Thanks,
COBRA COMMANDER
