Sean Taylor posted an interesting query on his blog http://seanhtaylor.blogspot.com/. Sean asked ‘How Pure Should Pulp Fiction Be?’ Some of New Pulp’s finiest responded.

When you think of pulp fiction, what springs to mind? The hard-boiled P.I.? The lost Earthman winning and wooing on Mars? The jungle lord? The aviator adventurer? The masked vigilante precursor to the comic book super hero? Weird horror tales with skeletons and damsels in distress? (For the sake of argument, let’s all assume you didn’t immediately go to the movie with John Travolta and Samuel Jackson, even as good as it is.)

Pulp has covered many genres, and was originally so named because of the cheap paper on which it was published. Pretty much everybody who loves the style knows that.

But, over time, some genres tended to become more synonymous with the definition of pulp than others.

And some would argue that pulp itself is a genre. (For the sake of this article, we’re going to treat pulp as a style of telling a story and not a genre unto itself, since so many genres were represented within its ranks.)

Kevin Eastman auctions his entire studio to benefit Hero Initiative

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles co-creator Kevin Eastman has moved his entire studio into Meltdown Comics… and he’s gonna auction the entire thing off in one giant lot to benefit the Hero Initiative.

The KEVIN EASTMAN ART STUDIO auction will run for 10 days beginning Dec. 25th, Christmas Day, at 9:00 PM (PST). It will wrap the evening of January 4th at 9:00 PM, which will be the final night of the 35 DAYS OF KEVIN EASTMAN event at Meltdown Comics in Hollywood. Swing by for the huge blowout closing night party!

“X-Men Origins: Wolverine” pirate gets a year in prison

One wonders if somebody at Marvel is thinking about doing the same thing to comic pirates…

A New York man has been sentenced to a year in federal prison for illegally uploading and distributing a copy of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” before the movies premiere.

Forty-nine-year-old Gilberto Sanchez was sentenced Monday in Los Angeles federal court. The judge also imposed a year of supervised release and numerous computer restrictions.Sanchez pleaded guilty in March to one count of uploading a copyrighted work being prepared for commercial distribution.

Prosecutors say he admitted uploading a “workprint” copy of the 2009 film about one month before it was released in theaters, then publicizing the upload on two websites.Prosecutors said in court documents that the film proliferated like wildfire throughout the Internet, resulting in up to millions of infringements. Sanchez has a prior conviction for a similar offense.

Ten years and a day after The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring arrived in theaters (yes, it really has been a decade since the first film was released) the trailer was released for the prequel, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

The film will be out next December, and stars Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, with Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Cate Blanchett, and Andy Serkis reprising their roles. Peter Jackson returns to direct.

Uwe Boll Talks In the Name of the King: Two Worlds

intotk2bd-300x376-9251619Director Uwe Boll is no stranger to video games or controversy but remains indefatigable and is back next week with In the Name of the King: Two Worlds, his sequel to the 2006 film he made based on the Dungeon Siege video games. The new film, his twenty-fifth, stars action hero Dolph Lundgren and is a direct-to-video release from Twentieth Century Home Entertainment.

The German –born Boll spoke exclusively with ComicMix to talk about the film and his approach, which ignores his critics, many of whom cite him as the worst director working today. In turn, Boll has challenged them to box, to see who is the better person but our conversation was far from combative.

ComicMix: This is your first sole directorial work. Any reason why?

Uwe Boll: In the past, I was more a producer, such as with Alone in the Dark. Normally I’m the director, producer,, and sometimes the writer. I think it came to an opportunity to get the financing completely through Canada; so I said, “Absolutely, let’s go for it.”

CMix: Why a sequel to a dormant video game?

Boll: I liked the Bloodrayne film series,  and I don’t always do sequels. I liked the first movie a lot, and while I didn’t have the financing to make a big sequel, I came up with a time traveling idea for a brand new story. It brings a little humor to the story and with a guy like Dolph, with his bone dry humor; he’s very intelligent, not a guy who can have long speeches. He’s more a character from the present, and I have all these kinds of things, sending him back to the medieval time, he can wander around asking, “Where is the toilet, can I drink this water?”

It’s an interesting new storyline, not just “let’s make a second part but only cheaper”. It’s better to be completely new, and I am actually happy with the movie. It has a lot of humor; it’s quick and entertaining. (more…)

Sequential Pulp Uncovers The Hunchback of Notre Dame!

PRO SE ENTERS THE E-BOOK BUSINESS!

Pro Se Productions announces today that while still putting the Monthly Into Pulp as it has since publishing its first work in August 2010, it now makes its extensive library available in E-book format!  Leading off with veteran Pulp Author Barry Reese’s THE ADVENTURES OF LAZARUS GRAY, Pro Se plans to not only make its current catalog available in coming weeks and months via the Kindle, Nook, and in other digital formats, but it also intends to make its upcoming 2012 calendar available via ebook as well.

“Yes,” Tommy Hancock, Partner in and Editor in Chief of Pro Se Press reports, “This process has taken a while and there’s a few reasons for that.  We originally offered PDFs of our titles and those actually were quite successful, but the requests for Kindle, Nook, and more versions digitally have poured in since day one.  Our biggest hold up was having the staff to produce quality e-books.  We now have that in the person of Russ Anderson, a Pulp author and a vital part of Pulpwork Press as well.  Russ is already at work converting our current books into digital formats, hoping to complete at least one a week for the foreseeable future.”

THE ADVENTURES OF LAZARUS GRAY, the first book entry into Pro Se’s Sovereign City Project features a hero who awakens on the city’s shores with no idea who he is.  Taking the name Lazarus Gray, he forms a team of adventurers to battle the crime, corruption, and evil rampant in Sovereign City.  And its now available for the Kindle here at Amazon and in a variety of formats here at Smashwords!  Hancock states that it will be available from Barnes and Noble for the Nook within the week!
