Who Withholds The Watchmen? Bookstores Drop Graphic Novels After Amazon Deal With DC

And the argument goes to the mainstream press:

Amazon, seeking to make its coming Kindle Fire tablet as appealing as possible, negotiated a deal with DC Comics for the exclusive digital rights to a hundred popular graphic novels. Among the series: Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, the Sandman and Watchmen.

Barnes & Noble, with a tablet of its own to nurture, did not like this one bit. Two weeks ago it removed all the copies of the physical volumes from its 1,300 stores, saying it would not carry any book if it were denied the right to sell the digital version.

Books-a-Million, the third-largest bookseller with 231 stores, followed suit last week, making the same argument.

‘The Walking Dead’ shambles to new TV ratings record

For those who think the comics/Hollywood connection is played out, it seems there’s still life in something that’s dead.

Season two of “[[[The Walking Dead]]]” opened to an eye-popping 7.3 million viewers on Sunday, and it broke cable ratings records in the key demographic categories of adults 18-49 and adults 25-54.

The preem averaged 4.8 million adults 18-49 and 4.2 million in the 25-54 demo — a new record for a basic cable drama series. It also easily ranked as primetime’s No. 1 entertaiment series for the night, according to Nielsen, topping the 18-49 delivery of Fox’s special “The X Factor” (4.2 million adults 18-49), ABC’s “Desperate Housewives” (3.4 million) and CBS’ “CSI: Miami” (3 million). AMC

AMC prexy Charlie Collier called the numbers “staggering, just like our zombies.”

Fast Company interviews Morgan Spurlock about San Diego Comic-Con Documentary

Fast Company talks with Morgan Spurlock about his documentary Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope (which comes with a companion book that Spurlock describes as “If Taschen made your high school geek yearbook”), how his generation liberated creativity for the basement-dwelling set, and how video games are the next gen’s comic books.

Organizers had routinely denied previous requests to document the event, fearing a public mocking of a misunderstood subculture. But that all changed when Morgan Spurlock Super Size Me, The Greatest Movie Ever Sold came calling with the support of his “geek dream team”: comics legend Stan Lee, Ain’t It Cool News’ Harry Knowles, writer Jeremy Chilnick, and wunderkind producer Joss Whedon Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly.

Cartoon Network and the way Retro was

I was informed that the Atlanta-based network would launch a 24-hour “Cartoon Network.” The thought was mind-blowing! … I’d always been a reluctant follower of Hanna-Barbera’s post-1960 TV cartoon roster, but I’d always acknowledged how the potent narcotic of nostalgia could jostle my level of taste.
