REVIEW: The Awakening of Roku

The Awakening of Roku
By Randy Ribay
279 pages/Amulet Books/$21.99

I was once again invited to the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender with the most recent offering in their Legends series of young adult novels. After previously entering this world, with no prior knowledge, with City of Echoes, I am now tasked with evaluating Roku’s story, a follow-up to Randy Ribyay’s 2022 book The Reckoning of Roku.

We know Roku today as a powerful Airbender, but this duology takes us back to his beginnings, notably his training and emergence as a promising young avatar. We open, three years after the previous book, in the dead of winter as Roku leaves his master, feeling the time has come to go out on his own.

En route to Agna Qel’a, he is forced off-course when he encounters an illness that has spread to the people of a Northern Water Tribe settlement. As he tries to help them, he discovers there is much more to this than a mere disease. He winds up partnering with his good friend Gyatso and a gifted waterbender named Makittuq.

We come to learn that their Tribal Chief Tiguaa had been harboring vital resources for profit. The illness that drew Roku’s attention proved to be one of many, including one that made even placid animals aggressive, threatening the villagers.

Ribay does a nice job deepening the friendship between Roku and Gyatso. Even after years of training, our hero harbors self-doubts as he continues to master the four elements, culminating in airbending (his opposite element). Sozin, who those far better steeped in this lore are aware, knows to be a Fire Lord, but here he is younger and a good companion to Roku.  He spends time trying to get Roku to confess his love for Ta Min, referencing their meeting in the previous volume, but Roku never finds the courage to do so, showing his youth and naivety. Their established friendship foreshadows events to come.

Similarly, introducing the Water Tribe nicely expands the world. It gives us greater insight into the reality of the time the story is set in, well before the events of the animated series.

His style is clear and draws you along without losing you. As a novice to this reality, I had little trouble piecing things together. This book successfully delivers action, character growth, and more profound lore, even if its style differs from previous entries.

Jed McKay Wraps up 32 Year Avengers Run in March

New York, NY— December 23, 2025 — Superstar writer Jed MacKay closes out his time with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes this March in AVENGERS #36. Three years of dark mysteries, epic quests, and cosmos-shattering battles come to a head in a giant-sized, can’t-miss final issue, featuring artwork by current series artist Farid Karami. To celebrate this pivotal moment in Avengers history, original series artist C.F. Villa returns with a special farewell variant cover that mirrors Stuart Immonen’s cover for the debut issue of MacKay’s run.

From the introduction of the Twilight Court and the Ashen Combine to Kang’s temporal machinations and Blood Hunt, it’s been an era of dramatic triumphs and epic stakes. Now, everything Jed MacKay has built comes crashing down in this startling finale that will redefine the Avengers’ future!

On leaving the title, MacKay said, “It’s sad to say goodbye to the Avengers after the last few years of chronicling their adventures, but we certainly had some fun- introducing them to the Impossible City, putting them against their old nemesis, Kang, and even putting them through their paces in the blood-soaked first-ever Red Band event! I got to work with some of the best artists working today on some of the biggest characters Marvel has, and I’ll always remember my time with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes fondly!”

AVENGERS #36 will also set up the next era of Avengers. Fans curious about what’s next should look no further than this summer’s ARMAGEDDON, including upcoming lead-in stories to the event like Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon; Captain America #6, the start of the next arc of Chip Zdarsky and Valerio Schiti’s Captain America run; and the recently announced Comics Giveaway Day™ title, Armageddon/X-Men #1 CGD 2026.

Phillip Kennedy Johnson goes Exclusive with Marvel

LOS ANGELES – November 25, 2025 – Phillip Kennedy Johnson, highly regarded across the comics industry for his enthralling work at major studios featuring The Hulk, Batman & Robin, Superman, and many more, has signed a multi-year contract to write comics exclusively for Marvel, effective January 2026.

The announcement comes as Marvel prepares to release the next chapter in Johnson’s ongoing run of The Hulk comics – Infernal Hulk – which arrives on shelves this Wednesday.

“My friends at Marvel have been ideal collaborators, and I’m extremely honored and excited that they’ve asked me to play such a bigger role in the company,” Johnson said. “Now that our Incredible Hulk run is kicking off its second act with Infernal Hulk #1, and with the other mind-blowing projects we’re putting together for 2026 and 2027, it felt like the time to make Marvel my comics home for a while.”

Johnson has amassed an impressive portfolio of popular comics titles since breaking into the industry in 2015, most recently continuing his acclaimed run on fan-favorites The Incredible Hulk for Marvel and Batman & Robin for DC. He is best known for his acclaimed work on Superman and Action Comics, Marvel’s Alien, Green Lantern: War Journal, and Hellhunters. He is the writer and co-creator of DC Black Label’s The Fellspyre Chronicles, BOOM! Studios’ Crocodile Black, Last Sons of America, and Warlords of Appalachia, and has also been published with Archaia, IDW, Aftershock, Dynamite, and Scout Comics. He currently teaches Creative Writing at The Joe Kubert School.

Born in Iowa and raised in Kentucky, Johnson is a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University and the University of North Texas, with a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree in Music. He is recently retired from the United States Army after more than two decades of service. Outside of writing, Johnson is an active musician in the Washington, DC/Baltimore area, having served as a trumpet player with The U.S. Army Field Band of Washington, DC, from 2005 to 2025, the Glenn Miller Orchestra, the Moscow Ballet, the Dallas Opera, Washington Symphonic Brass, and more.

Infernal Hulk picks up after Hulk’s epic rematch with the Eldest, the powerful first-born child of the Mother of Horrors, from October’s Incredible Hulk #30. The Eldest’s long-seeded plan comes to fruition as it uses the power of the Strongest There Is to usher in a new Age of Monsters, unleashing a dark destiny for the entire Marvel Universe and declaring war for its very soul.

“The Hulk story we’re building up to is the most ambitious thing I’ve written to date, and the titles we’re planning for 2026 and 2027 are legitimate dream projects for me,” Johnson explained. “My son, who learned to love reading from the same old ripped-up Marvel, DC and Gold Key Comics that I used to read, gave me his unreserved blessing to do this, and that was all the advice I needed. To him, to all my other readers, and to my fellow comic fans: I promise, I won’t let you down.”

While Johnson officially joins Marvel exclusively starting in January, he will finish his current runs for other publishers, including his heralded writings for Batman & Robin and Adventures of Superman: Book of El for DC.

“I’m as close as ever with all the awesome people at DC, and my current runs on Batman & Robin and Adventures of Superman: Book of El will continue through their planned conclusions next year,” Johnson said. “Comics are about making cool stuff with your friends, and I hope my DC fans check out what we’ve got coming at Marvel. I’m still getting better at this gig, and I CANNOT WAIT to show you what we’re building at Marvel right now.”

Sorcerer Supreme Title Moves from Dr. Doom to Scarlet Witch

New York, NY— October 30, 2025 — In the wake of Victor Von Doom’s fall, a new Sorcerer Supreme rises to take his place in SORCERER SUPREME, an ongoing series launching in December. Since its announcement, the mysterious series has kept fans guessing about which magical hero would receive the mantle. Today, it’s revealed along with the series’ creative team!

Wanda Maximoff has been many things: a mother, an Avenger, and the Scarlet Witch. Now, Wanda claims a new title: Sorcerer Supreme! Follow her adventures as Earth’s primary mystical defender this December in SORCERER SUPREME, written by Scarlet Witch scribe Steve Orlando and rising star artist Bernard Chang (Blood Hunters). Fan favorite artist Leirix will deliver spellbinding main covers. Superstar Scarlet Witch artist Russell Dauterman also returns to grace Wanda with a costume befitting her new title and provide variant covers for the first five issues. Each of Dauterman’s covers will spotlight a member of Wanda’s advisory council, including Clea, Chthon, Wiccan and more magical experts!

Defying tradition and breaking every rule, Scarlet Witch charts a bold, new path as the SORCERER SUPREME! But will her rebellious approach to the role bring magic in the Marvel Universe to new heights or leave it in ruin?

The Vishanti, unwilling to validate Wanda’s claim, anoint their own Sorcerer Supreme—AGATHA HARKNESS! Following a fiery battle with her former mentor, Wanda wakes up in Limbo, where nothing is as it seems. And if she’s going to escape, she must first defeat its ruler…MADELYNE PRYOR! And with Wanda and the Vishanti distracted, what rising mystical threats have escaped their notice? Determined to fulfill her sacred new duty, Wanda expands her scope and redefines her power to protect the world like no Sorcerer Supreme ever has!

On Wanda’s new direction, Orlando said, “When it comes to the Scarlet Witch…anything’s possible! Those are the works Wanda lives by, and they’re the words we as creators live by too. So, with the Sorcerer Supreme title in the wind after One World Under Doom, the question became—who’s the next to wield the cloak and the eye? Or more precisely, who could hear such powerful artifacts crying out from the edge of destruction? And in the Marvel Universe, there’s one person above all who hears you when no one else will—Wanda Maximoff!”

“I can’t wait for folks to see Wanda take up the cloak and the eye—for the primal disruptor to shake things up in the face of magic’s proprietors…with nothing less than the betterment of all in mind,” he continued. “And to be working with the incredible Bernard Chang and Ruth Redmond? That’s a dream come true, folks—each page they touch brings style and power to Wanda like never before!”

“I am overly excited about joining Steve and Ruth and the rest of the SORCERER SUPREME team,” Chang said. “We are putting our hearts and souls into crafting a new journey for one of Marvel Comics’ most powerful heroes. While this is my first time tackling the wonderful Wanda Maximoff, I look forward to the challenges ahead and aim to garner the trust and enthusiasm from both her longtime readers and new ones, and I hope you will come along for the ride.”

Check out the first three main covers by Leirix, along with variant covers by Rose Besch, Mark Brooks, Devmalya Pramanik, and Jenny Frison. In addition, check out the first three of Russell Dauterman’s variant covers as well as a variant cover spotlighting his original design sheet for Wanda’s new look. Plus, Inhyuk Lee captures the current state of Marvel magic in newly revealed connecting covers for WICCAN: WITCHES’ ROAD #1, DOCTOR STRANGE #1, and SORCERER SUPREME #1, all on sale in December, and Marvel’s Stormbreaker artist Geoff Shaw’s Winter Break Variant Cover for SORCERER SUPREME #1 is unveiled!

Marvel ends Ultraman Association with FInal Miniseries

New York, NY— October 31, 2025 — The climactic chapter of Marvel Comics’ acclaimed ULTRAMAN comic book saga arrives this February in THE FALL OF ULTRAMAN! The one-shot will be written by Kyle Higgins and Mat Groom, the duo behind Ultraman’s Marvel journey since its inception, and drawn by artist Davide Tinto, who returns after his work on Ultraman: The Mystery of Ultraseven.

Made in collaboration with Tsuburaya Productions, Marvel’s venture into the Ultraman mythos began in 2020’s The Rise of Ultraman, which delivered a bold reimagining of the pop culture icon’s classic origin. Ultraman’s Marvel adventures continued in The Trials of Ultraman, Ultraman: The Mystery of Ultraseven, and last year’s Ultraman X the Avengers, where Japan’s greatest superhero finally crossed over with the heroes of the Marvel Universe! It’s all been leading to this—at long last, witness the end of this incredible chapter in Ultraman’s groundbreaking legacy in THE FALL OF ULTRAMAN!

Together, they’ve crossed dimensions, unfurled conspiracies, tangled with giant Kaiju, and saved civilizations. But now, Ultraman and his team are given an unexpected glimpse at the path ahead – and that path leads unavoidably to the loss of our world’s greatest hero! What cosmic threat will be Ultraman’s undoing? Will the United Science Patrol be redeemed? And will Earth finally be lost to the sinister machinations that have been plaguing it for decades? It’s time to find out!

“Our very first version of the initial pitch for The Rise of Ultraman, our first Ultraman limited series, included an outline of how the saga would end,” Groom explained. “Now, five years later, that end is here, and it comes bearing the same title as it did in that first outline: THE FALL OF ULTRAMAN.

“It’s bittersweet to be saying goodbye to Shin, Kiki, Dan, and the rest of the Ultra Guard — but we’re thankful that we get to give them the send-off they deserve, and give Ultraman a final challenge worthy of both his shining heart and towering stature,” he continued. “For the fans who have been with us from Rise to Fall, thank you — we hope you enjoy the finale!”

“It’s been one of the great honors of my career to spend the last five years helping bring a new interpretation of Ultraman to Western comic book readers,” Higgins shared. “Getting to play even a small part in expanding such a timeless, heroic mythology has meant the world to me. My deepest thanks to C.B. Cebulski, Tom Brevoort, Jeff Gomez, Danny Simon, Kei Minamitani, and everyone at Tsuburaya Productions, as well as the incredible artists who brought these stories to life. And most of all, to my partner through every step of this journey, Mat Groom — without him, there simply wouldn’t be a series.”

REVIEW: The Avengers in The Veracity Trap!

The Avengers in The Veracity Trap!
By Chip Kidd & Michael Cho
64 pages/Abrams ComicArts/$25.99

Plain and simple, this book is a valentine to Jack Kirby. Chip Kidd and Michael Cho combine to produce a story that has the look and feel of an early 1960s Avengers story, evoking the King’s art style before it took an evolutionary leap. Set around the time of Avengers #4, we have Giant-Man, Wasp, Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America all on hand. Incongruously, the Hulk is also fighting alongside the World’s Mightiest Heroes.

We open with Loki having gathered a collection of Kirby’s various creatures from Timely’s anthology titles (including Fin Fang Foom, Goom, and his son Googam, and the Toad Men), and before he can unleash them for wanton destruction, here comes the Avengers! Dropping like gods from the sky, the quintet lay waste to the creatures with gorgeous poses and plenty of pin-up pages (branded like the old Marvel pin-ups) and double-page spreads, letting Cho show off his artistic chops.

Just as they appear on the verge of victory, Loki opens his Veracity Vortex, and the heroes are quickly laid low. Thor faces a crisis of conscience when he realizes he is merely a character in a story, his words and actions dictated by others. It’s not long before our heroes come face to face with their overlords: Kidd and Cho, evoking the days when Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and other comics creators were written into the stories.

The creators themselves are shocked when their characters come to life before them and then are taken back to the four-color world of superheroes, where they find themselves as kids. Of course they are. It’s where the spark of imagination was first ignited, and we are reminded that there’s a joy to these stories that has been lost over the years. It’s big and bombastic, and we shuttle between Kidd and Cho’s world and the comic world, all trying to find a way to halt Loki’s evil scheme (precisely what is never spelled out). But the solution requires a Kirby-esque machine that is a treat.

It’s a relatively quick rea,d but the oversized hardcover is a real treat to hold and to be reminded of what drew us to comic books in the first place. It’s not meant to fit into the Marvel Universe continuity, but stands beside it, a shining example of excellence.
