Playing with Toy Fair 2011: Recap, Part I

lion-o1_wr1-137x300-7377489lion-o2_wr-91x300-4630422Having fun at Toy Fair is hard work.

OK, So I’m not likely to get much sympathy about the “hard work” bit, but Toy Fair is an overwhelming experience at which toy manufacturers will show off their wares for retailers, wholesalers, and the press from around the world. Anything and everything from yo-yos to high ticket collectibles and everything in between. But on to the fun stuff.

The venerable cartoon “Thundercats” is getting  a reboot soon, and Bandai showed off a complete line of  4″ figures. They also had 8″ figures done of classic “Lion-O” and “Tygra.” Take a look at the difference between new and classic “Lion-O” (again – keep in mind that the Classic figure is really twice the size of the New one).

bandaitsnarf1-300x225-2030402The 4″ figures have a magnet embedded in their backs that activate features in  other playsets & accessories. Of course, if you want Snarf, ya gotta get the ThunderTank. Ain’t that always the case?

Adrianne Palicki

Meet Your New ‘Wonder Woman’, Adrianne Palicki

adrianne-palicki-lone-star-large-262x300-2422744Deadline Hollywood reports that Friday Night Lights alumna Adrianne Palicki has been tapped for the title role in NBC’s Wonder Woman pilot, executive produced by David E. Kelley for Warner Bros. TV.

Palicki won the role of Wonder Woman, closely associated with Lynda Carter, who played Diana Prince in the 1970s series, in a decisive manner – she was the only actress invited to test for it.

The Daily Beast got a look at the current draft of the script for the pilot, wherein Wonder Woman/Diana Prince is a vigilante crime fighter and a successful corporate executive and a modern woman trying to have it all. It’s a bit… oh, lordie:

Diana’s first appearance, here in her guise as Wonder Woman, is a Hollywood Boulevard-based action sequence set, cringingly, to the outdated tune of Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies,” the first of many musical cues—including tracks by Lady Gaga and Kanye West—in the script, all of which seem to prove that a) Kelley is a few years behind the times, and b) he watches a lot of Glee, since nearly all of these songs have been covered by the show choir.

GRANTON CITY PRESS RELEASES UNIT 13!!

UNIT 13 HEADS INTO WORLD WAR I ACTION

Unit 13 is the fourth title from Granton City Press.

The Unit brings a rag tag special force under the wing of rough and rugged Sgt. Crake, who must take the unit behind the German lines to stop the enemy from creating a legion of abomination which could turn the tide of the Great War.

While a World War rages in the trenches of Northern France, Sergeant T.S. Crake leads Unit 13, a secret elite military force, deep behind enemy lines. The diverse force follows the rumors and vague reports of diabolical medical experiments back to a small occupied village where the Germans have created something monstrous — an unexpected weapon that will fundamentally change the very nature of modern warfare.

When one of their own is captured during their escape, Sgt. Crake must decide whether to risk the rest of the Unit in a daring rescue. Reuniting with the Unit’s support team, they are joined by two new powerful allies and the question becomes that much more pressing. Do they return to their temporary base in England or do they follow their friend’s trail into the very heart of darkness?

Crake ultimately decides he cannot leave a comrade to suffer at the hands of madmen and will risk everything to save his friend. Half the German Army and a host of other dangers stand between them and success, but they have their own secrets that may just give them the edge.

Their journey takes them halfway across Europe to the German’s main medical facility  hidden in the ancient Altenschatten Castle. Will they survive the treacherous road into the lion’s den? And what will they find when they get there? What horrors are lurking in the shadows of  Altenschatten?

The story comes from the co-writing team of Canadian Calvin Daniels and American Tyrell Tinnin, who met through the social networking site Facebook which has been a key networking tool for Granton City Press, although it wasn’t always a process which worked.

“I’ve made attempts with several writers, but styles and visions don’t always mesh, so several efforts went to the trash bin,” said Daniels.

But Daniels did find Tyrell Tinnin, a writer from Wichita, Kansas.

“Tyrell has been a blast to work with,” he said. “We get along great and are really on the same page in terms of the spin-off title Unit 13.”

Tinnin said he decided to give the project a try because he liked the premise.

“History with a dash of science fiction, who really could resist that combo?” he said, adding he has found co-writing with Daniels, “Working with Calvin is crazy, you never know what story curve balls that guy will throw at you.”
Unit 13 is a sort of prequel set in World War One.

“Some of the characters show up in Granton City years later,” said Daniels. “Others are unique to Unit 13, at least for now.”

Tinnin explains the ‘feel’ of the title as being “a mash-up of pulpy ‘Weird War’ and ‘Kelly’s Heroes’ or ‘Inglorious Basterds’.”

Book #1 of Unit 13 is now available.

In preparation for the book’s release, Granton City Press did some pre-selling which Daniels said was important to bolster interest in the book, and to offset initial costs. People were provided a chance to pre-purchase the book, however, not just a regular copy of the book.

Instead, the first 100 pre-sales were sold as signed &_numbered copies of the book. They were numbered 1/100, 2/100, 3/100 etc., and signed by both Daniels and Tinnin.

Anyone purchasing a book through the offer will have an opportunity to purchase signed & numbered editions of future Unit 13 novels with the same sequence number. That will mean ensuring every book you purchase has a matching number such as 3/100, said Daniels, adding there are a few S&N copies of The Horrors of Altenschatten still available.

A BOOK A DAY TELLS YOU WHO REALLY WON WORLD WAR II!

http://www.bearmanormedia.com/

fibberWW2cover.jpg
spacer-6222360

Dr. Mickey Smith, Barnard Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of Mississippi, is the author of a new book, How Fibber McGee and Molly Won World War II. This entertaining essay combines serious subjects and comedy in chronicling a very special period in the broadcast life of one of radio’s most popular and best-loved series. In the book Smith describes how the special combination of the stars themselves, a writing genius, and the “perfect” sponsor, produced a one-of-a-kind program, melding laughs and patriotism during one of America’s darkest hours. Jim and Marian Jordan somehow hooked up with the writing genius of Don Quinn, and the unparalleled support of the Johnson (Wax) Company to produce an entertaining, funny series of programs with an uwavering message–America was in the right, the men (and women) in the military deserved unflagging support, and the folks at home had a vital role to play, assuring the ultimate victory.

The story is told via excerpts from scores of broadcasts, enhanced by the author’s observations. An account of the difficult, but ultimately successful, efforts of the government and of the broadcast industry to adapt to wartime conditions provides an illuminating backdrop to the story. Fifteen photographs illustrate the book.

The McGees’ messages, while always supportive of the war effort, were sometimes poignant. An example is Molly’s post-war reminder in support of the National War Fund, an agency devoted to providing recreational care and maintenance of morale for the military until they returned home: “We gave our boys a warm hand when they left. Let’s not give them the cold shoulder now.”

Fibber McGee and Molly highlighted subjects not usually given a lot of attention, such as the Coast Guard, Merchant Marine,”WACS”, Inflation, and Aid to European War Victims.

Batmobile Raider

Batmobile Inspires British Tank Design

raider07-e1297849935458-300x208-7298199In the movies, Batman fights crime with a collection of, to quote Jack Nicholson, wonderful toys. Hisham Awad, project leader of defense company BAE System’s future protected vehicles group, liked some of those ideas so much he used them to build an assault vehicle:

While Awad was showing one of his team’s concept vehicles, the unmanned skirmisher known as Raider, another of the assembled journalists gave a low whistle.

‘I like that,’ he said. ‘Looks like the Batmobile.’

‘Ah!’ Awad replied, with a grin. ‘Glad you said that. That’s what we based it on.’

Pardon?

‘Yes, we liked the look of that, so we designed something similar.’

What, the Batmobile in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight?

‘Yes, that one. You see, it turns like a motorbike and it has the same wheel configuration.’

Yes, yes, but you’re basing a future fighting vehicle on something you saw in a film?

‘Well, why not?’ Awad replied. ‘In all seriousness, we decided that we didn’t have a monopoly on inspiration, and if we saw something in a film that we thought might be a good idea, why not take a look at it and see if there’s something practical we can develop?’

Looks like Mr. Earle didn’t push sales hard enough. No wonder Bruce Wayne replaced him with Lucius Fox.

Borders Files For Bankruptcy, Owes Diamond Nearly $4 Million

borders_group-6122077The axe has finally swung. From PW:

After a drawn out process that began at the end of last year when it missed payments to top publishers, Borders Group has given in to the inevitable and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. The company has received $505 million in debtor-in possession financing led by GE Capital, Restructuring Finance. And as part of its turnaround plan, Borders said it will close approximately 30% of its current store base, about 200 locations, within the next several weeks.

According to Borders, the financing should enable the company to operate the stores that will remain open in a “normal course”  including honoring its Borders Rewards program, gift cards, and other customer programs. Additionally, the company said it expects to make payroll and continue its benefits programs for its employees.

The announcement made this morning was foreshadowed last night when Borders implemented an ordering freeze and Ingram, its lifeline to the publishers, stopped shipping books. Publishers are now on the hook for hundreds of millions of dollars, led by Penguin Group (USA) which is owed $41.1 million, followed by Hachette at $36.9 million, Simon & Schuster at $33.8 million, Random House at $33.5 million, and HarperCollins at $25.8 million. Neither major book distributor, Ingram or Baker & Taylor, were among the leading creditors, and only one book distributor, National Book Network, is owed money with $2 million outstanding. The top 30 unsecured creditors are owed $314 million. The filing listed $1.27 billion in assets and $1.29 billion in liabilities. Borders said it expects to be able to pay vendors for merchandise shipped to it after today’s filing; those owed money prior to the filing will only be paid with the approval of the bankruptcy court.

As of Tuesday, the company had instituted an ordering freeze and book distributor Ingram, the company’s major lifeline to publishers, had stopped supplying the retailer. Diamond had already stopped orders to Borders weeks ago, and according to Heidi at ComicsBeat, court filings reveal Borders owes Diamond Comic Distributors $3,906,549.94.

To say this portends major disaster is an understatement. Diamond is already in precarious financial straits, and they can no longer hide the fact that they have an account that’s millions behind which they may never collect. And their losses will ripple through to publishers, many of whom have no slack to survive the sudden hit to the bottom line.

Stay tuned. This is not going to be pretty.
