There were rumors back in Fall 2007 that the next Mortal Kombat game would pit the Kombatants against superheroes from the DC Universe, but they were quickly scoffed at and ignored.
After all, how could these two universes possibly come together? Would DC really allow Scorpion to rip Batman’s head off? Foolishness!
Well, all those people look like the fools now. Mortal Kombat Online has gotten wind that Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe is a reality.
The Mortal Kombat series is good at violence but poor when it comes to the comic book universe (see Malibu’s Mortal Kombat comics). On the flip side, the DC superheroes are great at comics and poor when it comes to fighting games (see Justice League Task Force on the 16-bit consoles). Can these two great tastes combine and taste great together?
Not many details about the title are known at the moment. Future details (and an official confirmation from Midway) may be forthcoming on developer Ed Boon’s website, Noob.com.

One of Marvel’s most popular and beloved characters, Spider-Man has appeared many different media including movies, comics, TV and video games. Previously, Activision has released video games based on all three of the Spider-Man films as well as other Marvel tie-in titles like Marvel: Ultimate Alliance and many others.
Now, they’re set to come out with a brand new game featuring the web-slinger called Spider-Man: Web of Shadows — which we previously brought you news of yesterday. Today at the New York Comic Con, ComicMix caught up with the producer of the game, Graham Fuchs, to get more on this exciting new project.
COMICMIX: Graham, thanks for taking the time to talk with us.
GRAHAM FUCHS: Sure, no problem.
CMix: Okay, a new Spider-Man game. Tell us a little bit about it?
GF: New York City has been invaded and martial law has been declared, so you’ve got S.H.I.E.L.D. downtown trying to get civilians out of new York.
Luke Cage is making his last stand up in Harlem and Kingpin is hold up in his stronghold in midtown. You play as Spider-Man and you’re at the center of it deciding how it will all turn out.
CMIx: Is this story based on a movie or anything?
GF: Its an original story created by us set in the comic book universe but not based on any of the films or anything. It was actually nice to not have to follow the movie storyline and sort of come up with things on our own this time.
The comic book universe gives us the ability to tailer the game play and chioose the characters we chose and the events that happen to make a fun game. (more…)
Today, Moonstone launches their revival of Captain Action with a special panel featuring Murphy Anderson, series artist Mark Sparacio and Disney animator Ruben Procopio who created a special sculpture for the event.

Spider-Man and the X-Men are almost always on television in one animated form of another. Heck, even iron Man is getting an animated series these days. Can’t we see new characters getting a shot at animated success instead of the same old same old?
Apparently, we can. During BET’s network upfront presentation, it was announced that a Black Panther animated series will debut on the channel in the future.
No information was given as to when we can expect to see the series or what it will be like, but considering Reginald Huldin is BET’s president of entertainment and also the current writer for the Black Panther comic series, the character should be in good hands.

This weekend, beloved 1960s hero Captain Action makes a triumphant return to the comics scene courtesy of Moonstone Books and a big debut at this year’s New York Comic Con. Manhattan comics mainstay Jim Hanley’s Universe recently hosted the Captain Action creative team of Fabian Nicieza, Mark Sparacio and Ruben Procopio for a pre-convention signing and celebration of all things Captain Action.

Speaking to The New York Times, Captain America co-creator Joe Simon reflected on the character and his struggle to gain some of the rights to the Captain America franchise. Simon will be one of the speakers at this weekend’s New York Comic Con.
Simon and Jack Kirby ended up leaving the franchise after fighting with publisher Martin Freeman over royalties, and they ended up at Detective Comics. Simon recalled that skirmish:
“We always felt ‘we wuz robbed,’ as Joe Jacobs, the boxing promoter, used to say,” Mr. Simon said of his dispute over the ownership of Captain America, which he settled out of court with Marvel in 2003. He said his royalties for merchandising and licensing use of the hero now help pay his legal bills from the case.
But copyright was not on Mr. Simon’s mind when he was conceiving Captain America. He didn’t even begin with the hero. “Villains were the whole thing,” he said. And there was no better foil than Hitler. Who better to take him on than a supersoldier draped in the American flag?

Born in New York’s the Bronx in 1969, Keith R.A. DeCandido was a science-fiction fan from the very start—his parents were fans of the original Star Trek, as well as classic SF/Fantasy novelists like Heinlein, Le Guin, and Tolkien.
DeCandido attended Fordham University and edited the college newspaper, and after graduating he worked for several New York publishing houses.
In 1990, he and John Drew created the public-access SF TV show The Chronic Rift, which DeCandido also co-hosted. In the late ’90s, DeCandido worked for Byron Preiss, editing anthologies and novels, and began writing stories for Preiss as well.
DeCandido’s first novel, Spider-Man: Venom’s Wrath (written with Jose R. Nieto) was published in 1998. In 1999 DeCandido got the opportunity to write for the Star Trek franchise, authoring the four-issue comic book miniseries Star Trek: The Next Generation: Perchance to Dream. Since then he has written over a dozen Star Trek novels and over a dozen novels for other licenses.
Here’s the manga I read this week (no, seriously, that’s the only thing they have in common) –
Kaze no Hana, Vol. 1

Yen Press, 2008, $10.99
Momoka Futami is just your normal teenaged manga heroine – an amnesiac orphan who’s coming to live with her unknown family four years after the mysterious death of her parents. Oh, and she learns that she’s the rightful wielder of one of eight ancient magical swords that are need to keep back various monsters that regularly pop into existence in this town.
Kaze no Hana has a lot of characters, and they’re all related to each other somehow, and most of them have magical swords, and…it just turned into a Russian novel in my head, with the added problem that I couldn’t even keep some of them straight visually. (This is mostly my problem; they don’t look identical, but they’re different in manga ways rather than Western ways, which means I can’t tell people apart unless they’re in the same panel and I can compare them directly.)
So, um, Kaze no Hana is complex and interesting, but it made my head hurt, OK? And I really don’t need that from a comic about the secret family of people that kill monsters – I can get secret families killing monsters in a dozen places without any headaches.
