‘Star Trek’ Bumped to Summer ’09 Release

Paramount Studios has shuffled the release dates for several of its films now that the writers strike is over, including J.J. Abrams’ much anticipated Star Trek.

Star Trek was originally scheduled to hit theaters this year on Dec. 25, but will now be released on May 9, 2009.

While many of the films being rescheduled have been moved due to stalled scripts or other issues related to the strike, Paramount has stated that the situation with Star Trek is actually quite different.

"’Star Trek’ is moving to summer because its has so much boxoffice potential," Par spokesman Michael Vollman said. "It does not need any script tweaks. They’re two-thirds of the way through shooting, and we would have delivered a great movie at Christmas."

The Hollywood Reporter has details on the Star Trek move, as well as other Paramount films likely to be rescheduled.

On This Day: ‘Wayne’s World’ Premieres

Today in 1992, the Saturday Night Live spin-off film Wayne’s World premiered, making Valentine’s Day that much more… romantic?

A-sphincter-says-what?

The film starred starred Mike Myers and Dana Carvey, reprising their roles from the SNL sketches that spawned the film. If nothing else, Wayne’s World gave hope to basement dwellers everywhere who hoped to someday beat up Rob Lowe and score with Tia Carrere.

AWESOME!

Jim Davis and Garfield Target Scott Kurtz and ‘PvP’

Sure, people give Garfield a lot of flack, but after Scott Kurtz of PvP received a mysterious package from Garfield creator Jim Davis, you can bet that the famous orange cat — and his creator — have a friend for life.

Over on the PvP site, Kurtz describes the gift he received from Davis in recognition of the strip’s 10th Anniversary.

I’ve been sitting on this for a week now, not sure how to properly frame or present it. Paul Southworth described it as “…like getting a Valentine from God.” Today it came in the mail and I decided the best thing to do was just photograph the unboxing. This office is now hallowed ground. I have no words beyond this: yes it’s real, yes he drew it, yes he likes PvP.

Kurtz has posted a Flickr Album of the Garfield box-opening event, with some commentary about why the gift has helped make PvP‘s ten-years-young celebration a very, very special time.

Psychedelic Romance, Drug-Fueled Love and… Steranko!

Sure, love is like a drug sometimes — but what kind of drug? Is it a quick pick-me-upper like caffeine? Is it the kind of drug that makes you taste colors? Heck, some might argue that it’s the type of drug that makes you look like Nick Nolte’s mugshot after a couple of weeks.

As a special Valentine’s Day treat, Journalista points readers to a pair of stories that deal with exactly that question, in their own ways.

In Our Love Story #5, Jim Steranko provides the trippy interior art to a Stan Lee story titled "My Heart Broke in Hollywood."

Honestly, I didn’t even have a chance to read the story. I started looking at the art and woke up two hours later covered in Sun Chips and Kool-Aid. It’s THAT good.

Next we have George Evans’ anti-drug themed "Slave of Despair" from a 1951 issue of Romantic Secrets.

This one tells the tale of Edith, a girl-next-door type with a world of opportunities and a steady beau, who makes a couple of bad decisions and ends up seduced by the "jungle beat" of hazy dance clubs and a pill-pushing, smooth-talking stranger. Soon she’s stealing from cash registers and acting like a funnybooks version of <a href=”

Winehouse.

… But seriously, folks, who hasn’t had a first date like that, right?

Anyone?

First Real ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ Pic Surfaces

Recently, a picture hit the net that many reported was Hugh Jackman as Wolverine from the upcoming film X-Men Origins: Wolverine. For whatever reason, that image turned out not to be the real deal. Fortunately, we’ve now got an actual pic from the film to show you, courtesy of the folks at 20th Century Fox (via USA Today).

In addition to this cool new pic, Wolverine himself, Hugh Jackman, offers some choice words in the article on his character and why he thinks the X-Men are so popular.

"I think one of the reasons the X-Men took off is that it connected in a way nobody saw," Jackman says. "They’re mutants with powers. But they’re also outcasts for being, and everyone connects with that on some level. And who wouldn’t want the power to get back at the people who ostracized you?"

The film will reveal Wolverine’s past as he discovers the world of mutants and, ultimately, the Weapon X program. Jackman, of course, doesn’t reveal many plot details in the article but does manage to reveal that the story will be about more than one mutant.

According to Jackman, Sabretooth "is going to play a big part in it. And there will be a good bit of cameos. But you can’t give too much away, because fans are pretty hard-core. Their expectations go up a level every time you come out with a new film."

X-Men Origins: Wolverine hits theaters on May 1, 2009.

‘Heroes’, ‘Chuck’ and ‘Life’ Get the Green Light for Fall

Even though the strike is over and many writers, actors, grips and craft service people are now getting back to work, the fate of some TV shows was still a bit uncertain.

Fortunately, according to NBC (via ComingSoon.net) three of my favorite shows, Heroes, Chuck and the underrated Life, don’t have to wait any longer to find out their fates because they have definitely been renewed for next Fall.

According to NBC Co-Chairman Ben Silverman:

"We are thrilled to be bringing back the high-energy dramas’ Chuck’ and ‘Life’ for next season. Additionally, we will be saving and re-launching our #1 drama and most successful franchise, ‘Heroes,’ so that it will run in all original episodes in the fourth quarter."

So, good news for fans of these shows. Although, it would have been great to see some new episodes earlier than next Fall but I guess you can’t have everything. At least they’re coming back, and for now, that’s enough.

The Many Loves of Jimmy Olsen

Over at ISB (otherwise known as "Chris’s Invincible Super-Blog" for you late-arrivers), love is in the air this week, as Chris Sims casts the spotlight on some of comics’ questionable romantic storylines and dialogue.

Among the highlights of ISB’s "Romance Special" series are a few scary/romantic encounters by Superman’s pal Jimmy Olsen, including an experience that gives new meaning to the term "male enhancement" and a tryst involving Jimmy Olsen Jr. and none other than… his super-cousin?

Seriously, it blows my mind every time I see this thing that this cover went through at least three people–including Jerry Siegel, Kurt Schaffenberger and editor Mort Weisinger–saw this and thought it would be a fine idea to just slap up a cover with two people in the throes of passion while their mothers–who are sisters–look on with emotions that are far more mild than the situation warrants. And what’s more, not only isn’t it mentioned on the cover, but nobody even thinks to bring it up in the actual story, either. Truly, 1961 was a different time.

Ah, Valentine’s Day.
