Butch Fatale is a fast-talking, skirt-chasing, two-fisted lesbian private investigator with an insatiable appetite for two things — women and trouble.

MICHAEL DAVIS: The Art Of The Deal – Part 2… kind of

I was going to finish up the how and whys of the Action File school system deal this week and begin The Guardian Line Christian publishing deal. I’ve decided to take a step back and deal with some important particulars about these deal-making articles. I’ve gotten some feedback in person and by email over the last week that I want to address so I’ll finish those deals next week.

Someone asked me last week to whom did I think I was giving advice?

I replied: “Me.”

I started last week’s article by saying I was not bragging when I say I’ve got a ridiculous résumé and by ridiculous I mean bad ass and by bad ass I mean impressive and by impressive I mean yada, yada and yada. I stated that so it was clear up front that I am writing from a position of one who has done what I’m talking about. I have little to no respect for people who talk a big game but it’s only talk because they have never really been in the game they are talking about. Case in point, sportscasters who have never played the sport professionally but find it easy to second-guess players, managers and coaches on the field.

‘V For Vendetta’ Inspires Shepard Fairey’s New ‘Occupy Hope’ Poster

occupy_hope-thumb-550x828-2050305

Alan Moore and David Lloyd’s V For Vendetta continues to inspire as a symbol of resistance. Here’s the latest version.

L.A. street artist Shepard Fairey has released a second original design for the Occupy Wall Street movement — and this time, instead of playing it safe with a wistful scene out of an Angela Davis documentary, he’s given his own (in)famous HOPE poster from Obama’s first election campaign a rebellious makeover.

It uses all the same colors and graphic-design aesthetics as the original. Only difference is, Fairey has replaced President Obama’s heavenward gaze with a “V for Vendetta” Guy Fawkes mask — one of the key props used by Occupy Wall Street protesters.

Across the bottom, the poster reads…

… “Mister President, we HOPE you’re on our side” (little passive-aggressive there?), and it’s stamped with a “We are the 99 percent” logo.

For one last dose of irony, Fairey recycles the same red-white-and-blue “O” he once used as Obama’s first initial into a ring around the “99 percent” slogan.

Martin Scorsese and James Cameron Talk ‘Hugo’

In case you didn’t notice, the forthcoming adaptation of Brian Selznick’s [[[The Invention of Hugo Cabret]]], Hugo, will be a 3-D movie. Since this is the first family friendly movie and first 3-D effort from director Martin Scorcese, it’s certainly going to be worth a look.

Here, Scorsese chats with 3-D pioneer James Cameron talking the use of 3-D in the movie.

A New ‘Brave’ Trailer from Pixar

Brave, Pixar’s summer 2012 offering, has a new trailer for you to enjoy.

Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. In Brave, a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald) confronts tradition, destiny and the fiercest of beasts.

Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane). Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Witch (voice of Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late. (more…)

MINDY NEWELL: Pissed Off Again

Lots of ruminating this week. Mostly political. Mostly causing me to make sure my passport is up-to-date and to wonder what the hell country I can move to if the Repugnanticans – my term for what passes as the Republican Party these days – actually win the Presidency.

This past Thursday, November 17th, marked the two-month anniversary of the start of Occupy Wall Street. Some smart mouth caller to the Tom Hartman show pointed out that the prefix “anni” comes from the Latin anno, which means “year,” so November 17th couldn’t be the “two month anniversary.” Why did I think while listening to this jackass that he was a front for the Koch-funded Americans for Prosperity or Karl Rove’s American Crossroads? So just call it an observance, a tribute, a celebration, or a commemoration, asshole.

The Los Angeles Times reported on November 20th that police officers who just walked up to students peacefully demonstrating in solidarity with the Occupy movement at the University of California-Davis and pepper-sprayed them dead-on in their faces have been put on administrative leave while their actions are investigated. (You can go to my Facebook page to see the video, or check out this link.) Hmmm. Administrative leave. That means they’re getting paid. Just like…
