Warren Ellis Now A Hollywood Red

20998_4_003-4146914Our step-brothers over at Cinematical report Warren Ellis’ Red has been optioned by Summit Entertainment. It will be written, or at least first-drafted, by Whiteout‘s Erich and John Hoeber.

It seems DC Comics owner Warner Bros. (well, DC is a division of Warner Bros, which is a division of Time Warner, which ate the cow that ate the dog that ate the cat) has permitted Ellis to join Max Allan Collins’ Road To Perdition (you know; the one with Tom Hanks and Paul Newman) as a DC Comics-published movie handled by another outfit. They seem to focus on capes.

Reports about the faithfulness of the adaptation differ; we’ll see when the movie is cast, re-written, filmed and edited. But every non-cape comics adaptation is a victory, ergo kudos to Ellis.

 

Sex, Lies, Random Thoughts, by Martha Thomases

It’s one of those weeks. It’s hot, and the elections and other summer cross-over events are not even in second gear yet. Nothing grabs me for an entire column of deep thoughts. So lets skip some stones across the idea pond.

• According to io9, two of the summer’s big-deal super-hero movies use sex with super-powers as a major plot point. It’s been decades since “Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex” and even 13 years since Mallrats, but the American public, especially the movie-going audience, seems to be giggling little nerds when it comes to this topic. Or at least the movie-producing parts of it.

• Although, when you think about it, sex with Bruce Banner is kind of dangerous. I mean, if you scratch him or something that ticks him off, you’re talking about major tissue damage. Or at least a dislocated wrist.

Grant Morrison recently said that Countdown had nothing to do with Final Crisis, even though the entire hype of Countdown declared it was all part of an overarching master plan. So Dan DiDio is a liar. Not misleading to make the story more fun for the fans, but a liar. If I were running DC’s convention presence, I wouldn’t put him on any more panels. (more…)

Review: ‘Emiko Superstar’ by Mariko Tamaki and Steve Rolston

There are no shortage of comics that feature an "ordinary" central character who decides to venture into the "strange" side of life. Emiko Superstar (Minx, $9.99) follows that well worn path, but it takes a surprising turn and ends up as quite a pleasant read.

Emiko is a teenage girl, something of a dork living a boring suburban existence. A summer of mindless minimum-wage labor is interrupted when Emiko sees a public outburst from an "art freak" and learns of an underground arts scene.

An outsider trying to break into a group of outsiders, Emiko unsteadily inserts herself into the scene, learning all the expected lessons (freaks are people too, you can discover yourself through art).

Ho hum, right? Except not quite, as writer Mariko Tamaki twists the book cleverly, pointing out that cool outsiders have as many problems as most people. That revelation is balanced by another, of the serious problems seemingly normal people have.

Life’s a big mess, Emiko learns, and sometimes you have to work hard to get through. Who can’t relate to that?

Review: This Week in ‘Trinity’ – Part 2

Two weeks down, and things are already heating up in DC’s weekly series Trinity.

We left off last week with [[[Superman]]], [[[Wonder Woman]]] and [[[Batman]]] all under the gun from mysterious forces: A dwarf solar system appears in Metropolis, giant robots attack Washington D.C., and Gotham… becomes Olde Timey?

The main point of interest is the nature of the attacks, and the way in which each hero handles the threat. Superman saves civilians and acts tactically. Batman wills Gotham back to normal by refusing the vision. And Wonder Woman smacks the crap out of some robots.

Based on what we’ve seen so far, the central notion of this series lies in exploring the identity of these three main heroes (in the first issue, this came up in how each saw variations of the same dream). Clark is a protector, Diana is a fighter and Bruce is…

So far, writer Kurt Busiek is leaving that one open, as the bizarre transformation of Gotham could imply a lot of things about Batman. It’s also interesting that Bruce is the only one of the three to remark on the strangeness around him.

Why would Busiek only hang a lampshade with Batman? Maybe it has to do with him being the lone human of the Trinity, and thus a stand in for readers. Food for thought.

Interview: Geoff Johns on the Return of Brainiac in Action Comics

action-comics-866-200-8349182Writer Geoff Johns is best known for re-imagining some of the most beloved heroes in the history of the DCU.

With his work on such books as Infinite Crisis, 52, Green Lantern, Booster Gold, Teen Titans and Justice Society Of America, Johns has “re-booted” some of DC’s most beloved classic heroes, including Hal Jordan, Booster Gold, Power Girl, The Teen Titans and The JSA.

But Johns’ ability to restore characters to their original glory does not stop with DC’s greatest heroes. No, he has left his mark on the villains as well, creating and revamping some of the scariest villains in DC’s arsenal. From his work on The Sinestro Corps War, and his run on The Flash he has placed Sinestro, Superboy-Prime, Cyborg Superman and The Rogue’s Gallery of The Flash back atop DC’s roster of its most dangerous bad guys.

Now Johns is reintroducing the most evil super computer of all, Brainiac, in the pages of Action Comics. Along with artist Gary Frank, the new arc, entitled “Brainiac” begins in Action Comics #866, in stores today.

First appearing in Action Comics #242 as a bald, green-skinned humanoid, Brainiac is the machine responsible for destroying Krypton and shrinking the city of Kandor down to bottle size. This five-issue arc will attempt to reintroduce the character who is arguably one of Superman’s most dangerous enemies back into the DCU.  

I had a chance to speak to Geoff Johns about the new arc in Action Comics and the experience of working with his mentor, Richard Donner.

COMICMIX: For starters, tell us about the upcoming “Brainiac” arc in Action Comics. What can fans of the book expect?

GEOFF JOHNS: Gary (Frank) and I are reintroducing Brainiac. The character has been around for a while now but he’s kind of been in a lot of different forms. Our goal was to create a villain that represents… well, we actually say it in one of the issues. For us, Luthor represents the worst of humanity and Brainiac, for us, will represent the worst in extraterrestrials. So we’re building off that. We want to introduce a Brainiac who is frightening, powerful and a little bit mysterious. We also wanted him to be very unsettling, very alien and feel different then the other adversaries that Superman has. The idea is to make Brainiac one of the villains that Superman dreads when he has to face him, rather than just another slot in a long line of villains. I think our first issue has a real creepy vibe to it and Gary did a really great design on him.

Happy Birthday: Charles Vess

Born in Lynchburg, Virginia in 1951, Charles Dana Vess fell in love with comic books and art while still a child—he drew his first full-length comic when he was ten years old.

He attended Virginia Commonwealth University and graduated with a BFA in 1974, then went to work as a commercial animator for Candy Apple Productions in Richmond. In 1976, Vess moved to New York City to try his hand as a freelance illustrator. In 1980, he joined Parsons School of Design as an art instructor.

He was getting regular comic book work, and drew books for Dark Horse, Marvel, Epic, and DC, but it was in 1989 that Vess became truly well-known in the field. He collaborated with Neil Gaiman on one of the issues of the original Books of Magic mini-series and also drew three issues of Gaiman’s Sandman series for Vertigo. One of those issues, #19 (“A Midsummer Night’s Dream”) won the World Fantasy Award for Best Short Story.

In 1994, Vess moved back to Virginia and organized The Dreamweavers, a traveling exhibition of 15 fantasy artists. Since then he has had many other showings and worked on many other comic books.

Another Vess-Gaiman collaboration, Stardust, won an Alex Award from the American Library Association, a Mythopoeic Award, and a World Fantasy Award for Best Artist. Vess has won a Will Eisner Comics Industry Award three times. He has also won a Comic Creators’ Guild award, a Silver Award, and an Ink Pot. He has won numerous children’s book awards as well, primarily for his collaborations with Charles de Lint.

Iron Man, Hurley and a Gay Dalek

Michael Pinto at Fanboy.com recently directed me to this Flickr set posted by artist Daryl Cunningham. There’s some great use of color in Cunningham’s work, and I can’t help but love the pop culture inspiration. Heck, there’s a bit of DC, a bit of Doctor Who and even some Lost mixed in there.

Review: ‘Water Baby’ by Ross Campbell

Ah, ambiguity. It can be the driving force of great fiction, powering along mysteries, character dramas and horror stories.

And, when wielded irresponsibly, ambiguity can sink a promising book straight into the murky depths of… somewhere or other.

Take Water Baby ($9.99), a new Minx book written and drawn by Ross Campbell. At the book’s start, surfer girl Brody loses a leg to a hungry shark. She sorta tries to get over it with the help of her sorta friend Louisa, but then things kinda get crazy when Brody’s old flame Jake shows up (he’s somewhat cool but a bit of a jerk).

The girls (who have a relationship that meanders toward lesbianism, but never conclusively) decide to drive Jake back home to get rid of him, and things kinda sorta get even crazier when they pick up Chrissie, a girl who’s either cool or a slut or just crazy. Maybe.

Review: This Week in ‘Trinity’ – Part 1

[EDITOR’S NOTE: This week we begin a new regular feature on ComicMix in which we’ll review DC’s latest weekly series, Trinity, featuring a story by comics legend Kurt Busiek and art by one of the industry’s biggest names, Mark Bagley. Join us every week as ComicMix contributor Van Jensen analyzes the most recent issue of Trinity and decides whether the series lives up to the hype. -RM]

A couple years ago, DC made history by undertaking a weekly series and, miraculously, actually getting an issue out on time every week for a year. As much of a success as 52 was, their following weekly, Countdown, was an utter flop.

Now we have the debut of [[[Trinity]]], which instead of following mostly lesser-knowns, focuses intently on the big three: [[[Superman]]], [[[Wonder Woman]]] and [[[Batman]]]. The creative team is as good as it gets, with Kurt Busiek writing and Mark Bagley drawing, so this has the potential for big things.

Will Trinity come through? I don’t know, ask me in a year, when I’ll either be singing DC’s praises or freebasing illicit substances while muttering incoherently.

Introduction aside, how was this first issue? Pretty not too shabby, which is a vague way of saying it wasn’t stellar and it wasn’t horrible. The story so far:

We start out in the cosmos, with a big flaming face screaming, “Let me out!” Turns out the central three heroes have been dreaming about this entity, which they discuss over a way-too-public breakfast in Keystone City.
