Lost amid the hubbub over the animated series based on the traditional DC Comics was The Zeta Project, a fun spinoff from Warner Animation’s first original creation, Batman Beyond. Thanks to Warner Archives the two season series, spanning 2001-2002, is being released on DVD. The series is focused on Zeta (Diedrich Bader), formally known as…
Jack Kirby created the Black Racer and his bedridden alter ego Sgt. Willie Walker in 1971. In the origin story Walker, an African American is paralyzed during a firefight in Vietnam. The army returns the young hero home where his wife resigns herself to taking care of him. The Source, Kirby’s mysterious power entity visits…
Everywhere you turn, there are odd mashups occurring throughout comics, especially at Warner Bros. and DC Comics where the wall separating properties has crumbled. The latest example is the confounding The Jetsons & WWE: Robo-WrestleMania direct-to-video film. Apparently they must have had a success with The Flintstones & WWE: Robo-WrestleMania because here’s a sequel. Thankfully,…
The concept of the DC Comics’ mystical characters gathering to combat occult evil always sounds good but of course, execution is everything. When it was done sparingly, as in Swamp Thing #50, it was quite effective. As an ongoing series, it proved tough to manage since each player was plucked from a title that had…
There are two types of comic book characters that are nearly impossible to sustain: the omnipotent hero, and the omnipotent villain. Whereas both feed nicely into the mythic environment, both suffer the same problem. If they can do anything, what can they do next? Many decades ago, Michael Moorcock more-or-less tackled this question in his…
Because comics gives you some idea what it will be like to live in a world run by an enormous, self-centered creature who considers himself to be a god.
Please read the first two installments in the series if you have not done so. From Dream Killer 2: Full discloser: For two decades I was not welcome at DC. “What did you do?” I’ve gotten that question countless times. “What did they do?” Not as many have asked, but more than a few. What’s…
DC in the 80s is a Webzine for the DC Comics Fans with an affinity for 80s comics. It’s fun, upbeat and engaging. Justin Francoeur and Mark Belkin keep the fan fires burning with wit and a great degree of nostalgic professionalism. I’m fascinated by the their endeavor, so I reached out to discuss it…
Sometimes I think the most difficult job in the DC Universe is Bruce Wayne’s accountant. Bruce Wayne doesn’t go to H & R Block. Who takes care of him? I mean, I assume that all the Wayne businesses, including WayneCorp and the Wayne Foundation, use one firm, and the person who does Bruce’s personal tax…
Created and written by our columnist John Ostrander in concert with his DC Comics editor Robert Greenberger, Suicide Squad has quickly proven to be a worldwide smash hit. The film has earned over $739 million and stands as the second biggest film in the DC line of adaptations, ranking thirteenth on the All-Time Super-Hero Adaptation…
The spotlight shines on far more than the core trio of iconic stars of Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders. With the likes of primetime television veterans Steven Weber and Thomas Lennon leading the way, the full-length animated feature film boasts a supporting cast of notable voices from across all entertainment mediums and some of…
I may have been one of the few to like the 2005 film version of DC Comics’ John Constantine. Yes, it had Keanu and yes it was in Los Angeles, not London, but it was an old fashioned horror film and worked better than it should have. As a result, I was primed to enjoy…
