Alternate ‘I Am Legend’ Movie Ending Leaked Online

Say what you will about the film I am Legend. You’re either a huge fan of the Richard Matheson novella and you hated the movie or you love Will Smith and he can do no wrong — or maybe, like me, you’re somewhere in the middle. I’ve always loved the Matheson story and I also liked the movie. Well, at least until the third act and the ending, which didn’t work for me at all.

Well, once again, thanks to the power of the Internets (via SlashFilm), we can now experience an alternative ending for the film not shown in theaters. This ending, certainly a more upbeat one, was most-likely shown during its original test screenings before release. It probably didin’t test well with audiences, for whatever reason, so the ending shown in theaters was used instead.

If you haven’t seen the film already, you might not want to watch this as it will certainly contain spoilers. If you have seen the movie and were let down by the third act as I was, then this ending might be the one you were hoping for all along.

Either way, enjoy.

‘Dark Oz’ Headed to Theaters

Another day, another comic book series being adapted into a movie. Variety is reporting that Pras Michael, best known as the guy who’s not Wyclef Jean in the Fugees, picked up film and TV rights to the ’90s comic book series Dark Oz.

The series, which was first published by Caliber Comics under the title Oz and then a five-issue miniseries titled Dark Oz from Arrow Comics Group, featured an older Dorothy returning to Oz and having further adventures, though of a much more dark variety. Hence the title.

Interestingly, the comics are long out of print. But you can still read them in digital form. Caliber and Arrow Comics have a deal with DriveThruComics to sell the issues online in downloadable form.

Production on the film is slated to begin late this year. The script was adapted from the original stories of Dark Oz creators Aaron Denenberg, Ralph Griffith and Stuart Kerr, Variety reported. It’s planned as a live-action film, with designs on making it into a trilogy.

Pras is also a producer of the upcoming film The Mutant Chronicles, which surprisingly enough is not a comic book adaptation.

‘Justice League: The New Frontier’ Tops Xbox LIVE Videos

Justice League: The New Frontier, DC Comics and Warner Bros. Animation’s direct-to-DVD adaptation of Darwyn Cooke’s critically praised miniseries, was the top movie rental last week on Xbox LIVE’s Video Marketplace. The film, which imagines the DC superteam in the midst of the Cold War, took the top spot on most days since its release on on February 26.

Scott Nocas, a Marketing Manager for LIVE’s Video Store said, "With the great success of Superman: Doomsday on Xbox LIVE just after last year’s Comic-Con, Warner Bros. and Xbox were excited to bring another DC Universe animated movie to our consumers. We continue to see great engagement with the movie, and other DC Comics content on Xbox Marketplace."

Currently available at no charge on the service is a bonus feature that includes interviews with comic luminaries Jim Krueger, Mark Waid, Marv Wolfman, Rich Fogel and Darwyn Cooke himself.

Retail sales numbers for New Frontier have not been released yet but the film is expected to have done well. In fact, some retailers are actually having a difficult time keeping the film in stock, making the Xbox LIVE film an even more attractive option.

Wombat, a gamer from the popular CAGcast podcast, recently recounted his own experience trying to buy the Blu-Ray version of the film at a Circuit City in Union Square, NYC. "Naw, man. I bought the last one yesterday, sucka," an employee told him.

Owch.

Frank Miller on ‘The Spirit’, Actors and Movies

Over at the official site for Frank Miller’s upcoming film The Spirit, the director has posted a new entry on the site’s production blog. Among the topics Miller discusses in the entry are more details about the film itself, the filmmaking process and his feelings towards actors.

At the blog, Miller describes the filmmaking process as "fun, thrilling and glamours as all hell. It’s also as hard a line of work as you can find." He also counts himself lucky to be working on the film and with so many talented actors, referring to himself as "one lucky S.O.B." He also goes on to thank "all the people who dragged me into this crazy business."

Having worked on a few film sets in my time as well I can tell you Miller’s observations about the process are pretty much spot-on. Making movies is often grueling, arduous, time-consuming, soul-sucking work that demands more of you than you ever thought you could give. Still, it can sure be fun much of the time.

There’s a saying in Hollywood that i’ve alway thought was appropriate: "The worst day on a movie set is still better than the best day working at a bank." I’m sure Miller would agree.

The Spirit hits theaters January 19th, 2009.

 

 

Spielberg Says ‘No’ to ‘Indy 4’ Digital Projection?

I don’t always believe many of the "rumors" circulating around the Internets. The web is a big place and people sometimes exaggerate, or perhaps even fabricate, in order to get some kind of "scoop" or exclusive "insight" for their websites.

That said, I am inclined to believe the following rumor which has recently surfaced, courtesy of tipster ‘Ohio Munson’ at JoBlo: Steven Spielberg won’t be allowing any theaters to show Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull using digital projection. It will only be available on film.

Think about that for a minute and then I’ll tell you why I’m inclined to believe this one. Spielberg is an old-school kind of filmmaker and has never really embraced his buddy George Lucas’ love for all-things digital. In fact, he vehemently resisted Lucas’ attempts to persuade him to shoot Indy 4 digitally.

Since he’s Steven Spielberg and is working with Lucas, a devout technophile, the director could have had the most advanced digital camera system in the world at his disposal for Indy 4 and yet, he still went with film.

He’s also, by his own admission, one of the few directors out there still cutting negative during post-production — something that, with digital post and non-linear editing systems like AVID and Final Cut Pro being the "standard’ these days, is almost never done.

Given his feelings regarding digital and his prior decisions, I feel he will stick with film for the theatrical release of Indy 4. Film is an aesthetic and creative choice he believes in, likes to works with, and, when playing at your local theater, will want his movie to be shown on. It’s really that simple.

If true, is this a bad decision on Spielberg’s part?

‘Superhero Movie’ Poster Revealed

It was only  a matter of time. After spoofing horror films, teen films, date films, epic films and Spartans, the satire train has finally set its sights on the highly profitable world of superhero movies. Some of the comedic "talent" responsible for bringing you Scary Movie are releasing Superhero Movie on March 28.

If the film is anything like its spoof brethren, most of the jokes will undoubtedly be ripped wholesale from other films and be of the "Hey, I remember that movie!" variety. It will also probably do huge business at the box office, ensuring more films of its like.

Superhero Hype has posted a large image of the film’s movie poster, which includes Tracy Morgan as Dr. Xavier, Regina Hall as the Storm-like Mrs. Xavier, Simon Rex as the Human Torch, Pamela Anderson as The Invisible Girl, Craig Bierko as Wolverine and Leslie Neilsen as, uh, Uncle Albert. With a cast this star- studded, there’s no way this film can’t rock!

New ‘Starship Troopers 3’ Trailer Hits the Net

Whatever your feelings about the first two Starship Troopers movies, the powers-that-be have decided you really want a third one. So, they’ve gone ahead and made it. And now, thanks to the power of the Internets, I can show you the new trailer for the third film right here:

 

 

This direct-to-DVD sequel known as Starship Troopers 3: Marauder, brings back Casper Van Dien from the first film as Johnny Rico and features the super-hot Jolene Blaylock as pilot Lola Beck and Boris Kodjoe as Dix Hauzer. The story centers around Johnny Rico, now a General and even more of a take-charge badass, who must go back into the field for one last fight agains the evil Bugs.

Look for the film on the shelves of your local DVD store later this year.

Dimension Films Locks Up ‘Locke & Key’

According to Variety, Dimension Films has just snapped up the rights to Joe Hill’s graphic novel Locke & Key — which, conicidentially, ComicMix’s own Van Jensen recently reviewed right here. Dimension bought film and TV rights to the graphic novel from IDW Publishing and will develop it as a potential franchise under the guidence of producer John Davis.

In case you’re not familiar, Locke & Key’s story concerns three children who move to Keyhouse, a mansion in New England that’s full of magic and secrets. Once they begin to explore the house, the kids soon discover doors that transport them to different places and give them powers. Of course, there’s also danger because behind one door is an evil creature that really wants to be let out.

Dimension chief Harvery Weinstein was particularly happy about his company’s latest acquisition. "I love what Joe wrote," said Weinstein in the Variety article. "There are fun elements that horror fans love, and it feels like a franchise where you can feel satisfied with each film, but there is a door left open for the next one."

IDW released the first issue of Locke & Key last Wednesday, with the second one set to follow on March 5th.

 

‘Justice League’ Movie Heads To Canada

Warner Bros.’ Justice League movie seems to be facing far deadlier villains than the Legion of Doom before it even gets off the ground. A rushed script and casting issues supposedly put the film’s status in jeopardy, but a dispute over filming incentives in Australia may damage things further.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that production on the film may be moving to Canada due to a dispute with the Australian Federal Government. The country’s new film incentive program gives a 40-percent rebate to Australian producers, but there is debate as to whether or not it should apply to movies with budgets exceeding $30 million dollars.

Director George Miller wants to keep the production based at Fox Studios in Australia in order to work with the same team responsible for the Oscar-winning Happy Feet.

"One of the reasons for doing Justice League in this country is the opportunity to bring back all the people we lost on Happy Feet who went overseas," Miller said. "We spent four years developing this talent and the cream of them left because they didn’t have another film to go on to …

"The idea is to say come back, start off on Justice League then move onto Happy Feet 2."

Miller described the film’s current state as "precarious" and said that Warner Bros. is looking overseas for filming locations, with Canada being the likeliest destination.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine production is starting in Australia while the Justice League are leaving it and heading for Wolverine’s home country. Don’t superheroes have any national pride anymore?

 

Five Fistfuls of Justice, by Ric Meyers

justiceleague-3464763I hope you’ve already read Matt Raub’s advance review of Justice League: The New Frontier  — DC Universe’s Animated Original Movie — which was posted days ago. Naturally, since it’s coming out in stores this coming Tuesday, it’s time, keeping with the comic source material, for my variant review. Matt critiqued the film itself. I, of course, am reviewing the Two Disc Special Edition’s extras.
 
This baby more than makes up for what I felt last week’s He-Man Volume One DVDs lacked: right on the first disc they have a near-full-length (nearly 45 minutes) doc called “Super Heroes United!: The Complete Justice League Story.” It tracks the comic from its inception back in the 1940s ‘til today, using images, clips, and just the talking heads of most of the major comic creators of the era. The information from the likes of Roy Thomas, our own Denny O’Neil, and even Stan Lee was so comprehensive that the doc doesn’t even require a narrator or narration. It does benefit mightily, as do all the featurettes, from the soundtrack music of Kevin Manthei.
 
Then the first disc alone more than makes up for what I thought the Resident Evil: Extinction DVD lacked: their doc sneak-peek of the upcoming animated Animatrix-like Batman: Gotham Knights D2 (“direct to”) DVD shows the lame, cheat sneak peek of Resident Evil: Degeneration how it’s done. There’s plenty of making-of stuff, talking heads, and exciting glimpses of the finished product as opposed to Resident Evil’s peek-a-boo tease. The first disc of Justice League wraps with two audio commentaries – the first a gang approach, with six participants from the production and DC Comics (though not a single person from the pic’s impressive voice cast), and the second with the writer/artist of the source graphic novel, Darwyn Cooke.
 
The second disc kicks off with a slightly shorter but just as interesting history of “The Legion of Doom: Pathology of the Super Villain.” While it contains many of the same talking heads as the “Super Heroes United” doc (Michael Uslan, Len Wein, Marv Wolfman, etc.), it also benefits from a Malcolm McDowell narration. Then, perhaps as compensation for the film’s inability to recreate the delightful style of the original graphic novel (understandably opting for the previously established designs of DC’s  recent Kids-WB Superman and Batman animated TV series), there’s the “Comic Book Commentary: Homage to The New Frontier” featurette, which goes into detail with and on Darwyn Cooke’s original.
