Box Office Democracy Review: “Veronica Mars”

In the interest of full disclosure, I should tell you that I backed the Veronica Mars movie on Kickstarter.  In addition to a myriad of cool perks this gave me, and thousands of other backers, access to regular updates on the process of making this movie, a level of access rather atypical today and totally unheard of a decade ago.  I watched this movie grow from a cool pipe dream to an actual thing that is actually playing in theaters.  This all adds up to a movie that I liked a great deal but am unable to assure myself that this affection is genuine, or is it more like the love a parent feels for their potentially mediocre child?

Frozen’s “Let it Go” in Multiple Languages

disney-frozen-anna-elsa-new-design-3541339Few knew what to expect when Disney released Frozen on November 22 but it has turned out to be an iceberg of a film, swatting lesser features out of its path as it has earned a whopping $336,699,913  around the world.

The studio, celebrating the deep freeze the northeast is currently enduring, has released the song “Let It Go” in a new multi-language sequence, spotlighting 25 different languages.

In Frozen, fearless optimist Anna (voice of Kristen Bell) teams up with rugged mountain man Kristoff (voice of Jonathan Groff) and his loyal reindeer Sven in an epic journey, encountering Everest-like conditions, mystical trolls and a hilarious snowman named Olaf (voice of Josh Gad) in a race to find Anna’s sister Elsa (voice of Idina Menzel), whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in eternal winter.

WonderCon Schedules Panels, Guests From Comics and Hollywood

One of California’s biggest and best conventions devoted to comics, movies, TV and all the things we love here at ComicMix is putting the finishing touches on its stellar lineup of guests, screenings and other exclusive happenings.

No, I’m not talking about Comic-Con International in San Diego — although that is a fantastic convention not to be missed. In this case, I’m referring to the other great California comics conclave known as WonderCon.

WonderCon, the premiere gathering of all-things comics and pop-culture in Northern California, celebrates its 22nd anniversary this year and runs from February 22nd to February 24th at the Mocone Center in San Francisco. Scheduled to appear this time around are many of the top writers, artists and creators working in the comics world today including Sergio Aragones, Kurt Busiek, Mark Evanier, Jim Lee, Tim Sale, J. Michael Straczynski, Ben Templesmith, Brian Wood and many more.

In addition to all the assembled comics talent, Hollywood will also be making its presence felt at this year’s WonderCon. Stars, writers and directors from small and big-screen will be in attendence including Kristen Bell (reason enough for me to go), Brendan Fraser, Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway, "Iron Man" helmer Jon Favreau, Chris Carter, Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny of the new "X Files" movie and Summer Glau of "Serenity" and "Terminator: the Sarah Connor Chronicles." In addition, the Con will also host the exclusive premiere of the animated "Justice League: The New Frontier" movie. Good times.

For all the latest details, check out the WonderCon official site. And, if you’re having trouble deciding if you should go, check out our coverage of last year’s event.

Sending candy bars to CW to save Veronica Mars

kristenbellleia-1762550Since it worked so well for Jericho, there’s another grassroots campaign in the works – this time, people are sending Mars bars to CW president Dawn Ostroff in an attempt to save Veronica Mars.

The Indian Food Store is collecting many many many Mars bars from around the world and sending them to Ms. Ostroff with a note that reads: "Veronica Mars: More Addictive Than Chocolate! Satisfy our craving for Season 4!" They got over 600 orders in the first three hours, and will probably get many more as the word gets out.

Mmmmm… Kristen Bell and chocolate…. <insert Homer Simpson gurgle here>

Yes, and we’re not above running the picture of Kristen Bell in the Leia outfit to get your attention. If need be, we also have the cheerleader and leather outfits. But only if you save the show.

Hat tip: Lisa Sullivan. For the story only. The photos are mine. Mine, do you hear?!?
