We just received word that next year’s New York Anime Festival and New York Comic Con are going to co-locate, with both conventions taking place October 8-10, 2010 in the Jacob K. Javits center in Manhattan. The full press release with all the details is after the jump, but here’s a highlight:
“Our decision to co-locate NYAF
with NYCC is the final installment of a strategic plan to place and
sequence our pop culture events in a manner that best serves the needs
of our fans and exhibitors,” notes Lance Fensterman, Vice President of
the Reed Exhibitions Pop Culture Group.“We are launching the Chicago
Comic and Entetainment Expo (C2E2) in April 2010, and we have moved
NYCC to a permanent October date, thus providing a spring and fall
balance to these two key events which will remain in place as we move
forward. Rather than create a third date for NYAF, it was decided a
co-location would be better for anime fans, professionals, exhibitors,
and partners. We spoke to attendees and exhibitors of both shows
before making this decision, and everyone agrees that this will provide
an opportunity for both shows to further grow and prosper.”

Living comics legend Joe Simon, still going strong at 95 (!), will attend the New York Comic Con as Titan Books hosts him in their first year as exhibitors. In fact, he’s going so strong, he just announced an extra hour of signing at the Titan booth (#1514) before his Saturday panel.
Following the recent announcement of Titan’s plans to publish The Official Simon and Kirby Library, launching this May with a deluxe compendium of the duo’s work entitled The Best of Simon and Kirby, Simon will be the subject of a special Spotlight panel, ‘Secret Origins of the Comic Book World’ [Saturday, Feb.7, 4-5pm]. Simon’s audience will be treated to jaw-dropping anecdotes from the Golden Era of American comics, revealing the stories behind the creators and creations that shaped an American art form.
Before and after the panel on Saturday, Feb. 7, from 2:30-3:30pm and 5:30-6:30pm, Joe Simon will be appearing at Titan’s booth to sign exclusive printed lithographs for fans. Two designs will be available, one featuring the iconic Fighting American and the other starring the perennially seductive The Girl Who Tempted Me. With each one hand-numbered from 1 through 100 and signed by Joe Simon himself, these glorious limited edition lithographs will be on sale for $75 each and only available at NYCC.

The city of big shoulders will soon hold up a second "as major as you can get in the midwest" comic convention. As announced today by the fine folks who bring you the New York City Comic Con, the newly dubbed Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (or for us locals, the aptly catchy ‘C2E2’) will take the city by storm April 16th-18th, 2010 in the ‘As Deep As Our Pizza’ McCormick Place Convention Center.
Boasting the fastest growing attendance list in recent memory, Reed Exhibitions promises to come to town with guns a’ blazing, Capone style. Lance Fensterman, Vice President and Show Manager (for this year’s impending New York Comic Con, and the aforementioned Chicago show) wants to let the fans know that they are “aiming big”:
“We plan to apply everything we have learned in launching and building New York Comic Con to our Chicago event and we intend for it to be a major attraction right out the gate. Of course, this not only means providing a customer friendly atmosphere but also providing dynamic programming that boasts top talent from across the pop culture spectrum, including artists, creators and celebrities from Hollywood, TV, comics, books, video games, toys, Anime, Manga and all other applicable aspects of the popular arts. But, most importantly, we will also seek to make adjustments so that our show reflects the essence of Chicago. This will be critically important. The city itself will form an important part of our identity.”
Prior to this, Chicago has been host to Wizard World Chicago, as well as the new-and-not-created-by-corporate-overlords-grassroots Windy City Con. Given the recent announcement of Wizard World Austin’s demise and the postponing of Wizard World LA, it seems the wave of change hitting the nation is hitting the con circuit too.
…and the groundhog saw his shadow, so that means we have six more weeks to plan for New York Comic-Con, right?

Ah, the post-holiday slump. Retailers are retrenching, publishers are getting ready for announcements at NYCC– some days it seems if it wasn’t for Watchmen news, we’d have no news at all. Luckily, we keep getting more of that.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox and Warner Bros. are letting it leak that they are “close” to reaching a settlement in their dispute over rights to Zack Snyder’s Watchmen movie that will allow Warners to release the film as planned on March 6th. Lawyers for Fox and Warners met Monday in the chambers of Federal Judge Gary Feess. Warner Bros., which has already spent at least $150 million to produce the Watchmen movie, has evidently dropped its request that Judge Feess move up the January 20th injunction hearing.
What’s the best sign of progress? Commercials. Warner Bros. rolled out TV ads for the movie this weekend, still sticking to the March 6th release date– ironically, on the Fox network’s Sunday’s season premiere of 24.
What, you didn’t get to play the Hellboy: The Science of Evil demo at New York Comic Con? I’m so sorry. Your tears taste so sweet.

Well if you’re curious how the game looks in motion, Konami has released the first official gameplay footage. Hellboy faces off against goblins, werewolves, Japanese demons and weird stuff that could only be imagined by Mike Mignola. As you can see for yourself it takes cues from God of War and Ninja Gaiden type games: crazy, over the top beat ’em ups with big boss battles.
Opening up the videogame console war debate once again, there were slight differences in the game from system to system. The graphics on the PlayStation 3 version were crisper, while the Xbox 360 version played smoother. The PSP version was less detailed, but the difference was barely noticeable on the portable’s smaller screen. All three versions played the same graveyard level where Hellboy fought a host of goblins. The lock-on system was not easy or natural, but I did enjoy ripping a goblin’s head off to use as a grenade.
The Cinematical crew are reporting that Lionsgate is moving up the release date for Frank Miller’s adaptation of Will Eisner’s The Spirit from January 16 of next year to Christmas Day (December 25), 2008.
Here’s the new tale of the tape for The Spirit:
So instead of going up against Mall Cop, starring Kevin James as a wacky security guard, and the Notorious B.I.G. biopic, The Spirit will face off against Adam Sandler’s Bedtime Stories, the supposedly ultra-heartwarming Marley & Me, The Tale of Despereaux, and the aftershocks of Twilight and The Day the Earth Stood Still.
Oh, and if you haven’t seen the trailer for The Spirit yet that debuted at New York Comic Con, here it is:
It started out so innocently. Michael Agrusso made a silly video for his girlfriend. He thought it was too funny not to share, so he created a YouTube account with the username ItsJustSomeRandomGuy — just in case someone decided to sue. So began the Internet sensation “I’m a Marvel… And I’m a DC”.
Fast-forward a bit and not only has he not been sued, but some of the companies he’s lampooned have featured him on their official sites. Next thing you know, he’s got his own panel at the New York Comic Con.
Agrusso began the Saturday panel with a confession: He forgot to buy his girlfriend and co-producer of the videos, ItsJustSomeRandomGal, an airline ticket. His girlfriend was kind enough to her regards via YouTube, however.
The video side of Agrusso’s presentation continued with a DC-centric promotional film the New York Comic Con had commissioned that was created but not released on the Internet at the request of DC. Let’s just say Wonder Woman got hit on at the convention a lot.
The filmmaker then he announced that the series that grew out of his initial efforts, Marvel/DC Happy Hour, wll be launching its second season — with actual sets, special effects and bigger storylines. Same silly jokes, though. The first two-part episode of Season Two is posted after the jump:
