First of all: I checked multiple times, because I keep expecting that title to have an exclamation point. But it does not, and that slightly disappoints me. That might be the only criticism I have of this book, so I’m putting it up front. Laser Moose and Rabbit Boy: Spidermania is the fifth and most…
I am no expert on Euro Disney comics. Fantagraphics has been reprinting what they say are the best of that large universe – and I have no reason to doubt them; publishing programs always try to get the best of whatever – for a decade or more, and I’ve dipped into that sequence here and…
I’m sure I’ve re-read this story since 1986. You can’t prove it from this blog, though. And my copy of the trade paperback is the original 1987 edition, with minimal credits and supplemental material, from the era when the Big Two were still figuring out the whole reprint-floppies-in-a-permanent-format thing. (I’m not sure how I can…
I try to treat books on the level I find them; it’s only fair. This one is the first of a decent-length series of Western comics by two French creators. It collects the first two, very closely linked books in the series, both originally published in 2015 and translated by Tom Imber for this 2026…
I regularly read books of funny comics by creators I’m not familiar with. This is usually great – new funny stuff! new perspectives! potentially new favorites! – and there are lots of books out there by lots of funny people. But then I come to write about them here, and I worry that I’m saying…
The early 1970s were a transitional period for feature films. A new generation of filmmakers was making their presence known, alongside actors still unfamiliar to mainstream audiences. Content was evolving away from escapist fare toward more serious, provocative material. MGM, however, seemed slow to catch up. When Herb Solow, formerly of Desilu and Paramount, took…
There was a time when slackers were hip. Especially young slackers, particularly in Seattle or thereabouts. I don’t know why. I don’t remember the sequence, thirty-some years later – I think it was a “scene” first, even before Nirvana hit big, with breathless media coverage about what all these wacky young people were doing. But…
There are some creative projects that you’re pretty sure just aren’t for you. Maybe it’s in a genre you know nothing about – and aren’t inclined to learn. Maybe it’s a creator that just doesn’t click for you. Or maybe you know that the project is doing something you’re not really interested in. And then,…
I think this is still the most recent Black Hammer collection; it came out last November. It’s set in the modern day, and does not feature the series main characters – the group of five Bronze Age heroes stuck on an extradimensional farm, like that dog you had as a child that had to go…
I reviewed a lot of the Complete Peanuts series when they were coming out – I bought them all, and read them contemporaneously, but the blog started up in the middle of that timeframe – so there’s already a lot of words on this blog about Charles M. Schulz and his comics. This one, back…
Every book is from a particular person, with a distinctive point of view. The best authors realize that, and are as deeply themselves as they can be, to emphasize the things only they would say, in the ways only they would say it. Wild That We’re Alive is a collection of diary comics, from one…
I like reading short stories much more than I like writing about them. And I don’t read short fiction all that much, so maybe I don’t even enjoy even reading them as much as I think I do. That’s complicated math, so I’ll leave it there. Jordan Crane has been making comics for thirty years,…
