SciFi Channel becoming Syfy: So yeah, f*** you

The Sci-Fi Channel is going through its fourth logo in a decade, and its third network name. It was created as the Sci-Fi Channel, then became just Sci Fi, and as of June 7th, 2009, it will be known as SyFy.

Yes, we know April’s fool isn’t for two weeks. This is, sadly, real.

Response to the change has been, shall we say, unenthusiastic.

One commenter noted that the new name stands for "so yeah, f*** you" since they feel as if that’s what the attitude toward their fanbase seems to be, noting their horrible fan relations as compared to, say, ESPN. Another noted that it’s yet another attempt to remove the science from science fiction, which certainly seems to be working well over there.

Apparently, one of the reasons for the name change is that you can’t trademark Sci-Fi. To quote the press release, SyFy "firmly establishes a uniquely ownable trademark that is portable across all non-linear digital platforms and beyond, from Hulu to iTunes. Syfy also creates an umbrella brand name that can extend into new adjacent businesses under the Syfy Ventures banner, such as Syfy Games, Syfy Films and Syfy Kids."

So SyFy is just CyA, as it were.

In other news, the parent company is changing their name to NyByCy, so they can compete in Australia.

Sci Fi Channel hits Head for DVD

A few forthcoming DVD announcements caught our eye and we share them with you as the holiday season rapidly approaches.

Fox Home Entertainment will be releasing a high-definition Blu-ray version of Stargate – The Ark of Truth on January 13, 2009. The standard release came out last March after airing on Sci Fi Channel. The retail price will be $34.99.

The video is a continuation of Stargate SG-1 after the weekly series’ story ended after 10 seasons.

Extras are expected to include the same from the standard edition.

Meantime, Universal Home Entertainment has announced a January 6, 2009 release for the fourth season of Battlestar Galactica, shortly before the remaining ten episodes begin airing on Sci Fi Channel later that month.

According to Digital Bits, the 10-episode set will be on four discs complete with the broadcast and extended version of Razor and the Razor webisodes.

This is only planned as a standard DVD release.  Apparently, Universal is waiting for the entire series to wrap before releasing any of it on Blu-ray.

McDonnell Leaves ‘Galactica’ for ‘Grey’s’

mary-mcdonnell-5637345The Galactica Sitrep reports that Mary McDonnell will leave the president’s office aboard the Galactica to join ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy for a mid-season three-to-five episode arc. Episode ten is already filming so this should air after the holidays when the final Battlestar Galactica episodes also air on Sci Fi Channel.
 

‘Lost’ Begins Anew on Two Channels

Many people complaint that some serialized shows are tough to follow given their serialized nature.  Complex ones, such as Alias or Lost, certainly have shed viewers who miss even one episode and get confused when they tune back in. These days, DVD box sets help a lot but not everyone likes to buy or even rent these.

For those people, today is an important one as both G4 and Sci Fi Channel begin rerunning Lost from the pilot episode going forward.

Sci Fi Channel will air the two-hour pilot and the next two episodes tonight beginning tonight at 7 p.m.  Every Monday night the channel turns over all four hours of prime time to the series so you can get caught up in time for the new season’s debut on ABC sometime in January. The minisite also provides context and clues.

G4, on the other hand, will be offering one episode per night, beginning tonight at 9 p.m. but will offer them in their patented 2.0 format, with interactive elements plus on screen data such as facts, character profiles and creators’ commentary and polls, games, and chat functionality available online.
 

Online Animation: An Olympic Train Wreck?

Cartoonist / animator / musician Joe Fournier has been doing some sweet stuff online, including this clever black-and-white cartoon about Chicago’s bid for the 2016 Olympics… something about a… train wreck?

Joe’s illustrations have appeared in all sorts of places – Playboy, Forbes, Premiere, and all sorts of newspapers – and he plays a vital role in the burgeoning online animation field. His cartoons have been seen on the Sci-Fi Channel, at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival, and the National Gallery of Art.

It’s good stuff. Check him out.

Holy time-wimey, wibbly-wobbily bits, Doctor! It looks like the BBC/Sci-Fi Channel schedules got the best of us here at ComicMix, so  in the interest of preventing any  more spoilers, we’re pulling this article off the site and re-posting it on Monday , April 28.

Slices of Galactica Pie

battlestar_galactica_40-5095423In what is certain to be received with shock and awe, the vaguely innovative Sci-Fi Channel is going to precede the November 24th broadcast of the two-hour Battlestar Galactica teevee movie Razor with a bunch of two-to-three minute "mini-sodes" (their term, not mine) that will "provide background and context" for the movie special and, no doubt, help round-out their DVD release.

The micro-story will revolve around the first Cylon War and a young William Adama (Nico Cortez). The gumball-sized mini-sodes will be broadcast on Sci-Fi in October and November. Consult your local listings for time, but don’t be too surprised if you discover nada en detalle.

Remember, while watching, you can blink, but don’t dare sneeze.

Sci-Fi starts anime Mondays

3rdgig-9179988According to Broadcasting & Cable magazine, the Sci Fi Channel will be launching a two-hour anime block on Monday nights starting on June 11 from 11:00 PM to 1:00 AM. Yep, that’s right up mear-daily against Adult Swim’s manga block.

The cable channel owned by NBC Universal will be turning to Starz Media’s Manga Entertainment. The schedule has yet to be set in stone, but they’ll be kicking off with Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society, and airing Noein, Tokko, and Macross Plus for at least the following two weeks.

Unless they change their minds.
