Review: ‘Lost the Complete Sixth Season’

lostseasonsixbluray1-3130578Every so often there is a television show that redefines what can be done with the form and ABC’s [[[Lost]]] was just one of a string of series that have successfully gotten out attention. It also spawned numerous imitators, none of which have managed to actually build enough suspense to overcome weak writing and lackluster characterization.

Lost today is a sprawling series that can be maddeningly frustrating as it failed to resolve every dangling plot thread nor did it make every character feel significant. But, when it debuted, we were fascinated by the concept of these survivors on an island that with every passing week proved to have as many secrets as its inhabitants. We were fascinated, and the flashbacks that enriched the core cast was a brilliant touch as were the subtle bits showing that they were connected in heretofore unknown ways before anyone boarded Oceanic Flight #815.

Wisely, the producers and ABC recognized that the show was rapidly losing its way without an end date and the minute one was selected, and it was decided to stockpile episodes and run them without interruption each spring, the show was strengthened. Still, there were tremendous expectations for the sixth and final season, wondering if even 18 hours of programming would sufficiently tie up the loose ends and give us a satisfactory conclusion. The season is being released on DVD this week from ABC Studios and it holds up to revisiting.

Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof threw us for a loop by introducing two entirely new concepts in a season that was billed as the one that would bring things to a close. First, there was the discovery of the Temple along with its harsh leader, Dogen. And there was the introduction of the Flash Sideways which gave us the Earth-2 version of the characters. The later was actually a brilliant touch, allowing us to see what might have been and allowing departed cast members to return for farewell appearances without spoiling their mostly satisfying exits. Every passing week allowed us to see things slowly come together, leading to the inevitable melding of universes in the finale. (more…)

Warner now lets you upgrade TV DVDs to Blu-Ray editions

Warner just sent out word that their successful program to allow fans to upgrade their existing DVD films to Blu-ray editions has now been expanded to include television series. If you’re like me, this is welcome news. Here’s the official release:

Converting your TV collection on DVD to Blu-ray just got easier with the addition of several TV favorites now eligible for upgrade on DVD2Blu.com.

Man Arrested For Possession of a Controlled Simpstance

Thanks to the fine detective work of some awesome Aussies in Ipswich, Kurt James Milner was arrested for possession. Possession of what you ask? Well… short answer… pornographic photographs. Longer, creepier answer… pictures of the Simpson children (of the popular Fox franchise, mind you.) in less than “PG” fashion.

To his defense, Mr. Milner was quick to note the images “were just jokes” not meant for personal satisfaction; And come on guys, who doesn’t get an occasional lewd e-mail from a friend or disgusting family member every so often? And who then would choose to save said lewd image on to their hard drives to later show other friends and family? Who? Perverts you say… Point taken. Working even harder against his “it was just a joke defense” came Milner’s 2003 arrest for possession of child exploitation material. Sum 59 images of “non-animated” (That’s “HUMAN” for the rest of us) children were found on his personal computer. Either Milner is an obvious sexual deviant, or he has one sick sense of humor. Sadly, his 2003 arrest garnered him 2 years probation, but no recorded conviction. Lucky for all of us, Kurt decided that his defense was a shallow as his taste, and plead guilty. He was convicted this time, albeit his year long sentence has been given a five year suspension.

And the real tragedy? Milner missed an obvious defense. Lisa Simpson may look like an 8 year old girl, but she’s been on TV for twenty years, taking her several years past the age of consent. And we all know that Simpsons is in a fixed continuity.

This could lead us into an interesting debate concerning what exactly constitutes pornography in the day and age of the internet. Certainly men like Milner (and his Aussie mates Phillip McGuire, and John McEwan) are in the wrong for possessing pictures of the beloved cartoon children in compromising positions. Lest us forget though, even Hugh Hefner got Marge to undress for the pages of Playboy only months ago. But Marge ain’t a child. And we all know blue up-dos are mega hot.

Irredeemable #10: Boy, Mark Waid must’ve hated ‘Action Comics’ #442

action-comics-442-8931713Warning: We’re discussing Irredeemable #10, out in stores this week, and we’re probably going to spoil a minor plot point. You might want to read it first before you go any further.

Based on part of Irredeemable #10, I can tell that Mark Waid read Action Comics #442 at a very impressionable age– specifically “The Midnight Murder Show” written by Cary Bates, with art by Curt Swan and Kurt Schaffenberger.

And he was struck by the sheer implausibilty of it all. And re-reading it, I can’t blame him.

Let me recap the plot a bit: Late night talk show host Johnny Nevada, host of GBS’s “The Midnight Show” has been kidnapped by the psychotic and trigger-happy “Touch” McCoy and his henchman, Louie, because all criminal henchmen in Superman stories are named Louie. 

Nevada is being held for ransom of ten million dollars. (In 1974, that was enough to stun a TV network– in 2004, ABC spent more than that on the pilot of Lost, and today, there are pilots rumored to cost fifty million dollars. My, how times change.)

To catch the kidnapper, Superman hatches a plan to goad the kidnapper into shooting, which he will be able to hear with his super-hearing. So Superman goes on The Midnight Show and goads Touch into shooting his .45
at Carso– er, Nevada, which Superman will hear fire from across the
city, and can get there before the bullet travels the distance to hit
Nevada.

All well and good, except that Superman has forgotten that a .45 caliber bullet travels at 800 feet per second. In a 20 foot room, it will take 1/40th of a second. 

In
that time, the sound of the gunshot will only travel 28 feet. It’s not
going to matter if he’s faster than a speeding bullet if he can’t hear
it before it hits the target.

We won’t even get
into the argument of how Superman knew how far away the shot was or the
exact direction to fly off in– suffice it to say that it’s a
completely implausible story.

I mean, really– TV networks caring about the hosts of their late-night talk shows?

Dollhouse renewed amid Hulu audience size controversy

First, the good news: Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse has been renewed:

The show will return for 13 episodes, with an option for more episodes
if required.  Return is seen likely for Fall.  The show budget has been
slashed, however the show is moving from 50 minutes per episode to 42
minutes per ep, which should help bring down some production costs. 
The move will also mark a shift in creative direction of the show.

Now, why was it renewed? The story is that the Fox execs were comparing Dollhouse to Firefly in terms of TV ratings
(i.e. pretty bad), but also took into account that Firefly sold a truckload of DVDs and turned into a movie that made
an okay profit, and apparently predict a similar trajectory for
Dollhouse.

But I suspect Fox is looking at other info, to wit, the numbers on Hulu. Nielsen claims that Hulu had 8.9 million unique visitors in March, but comScore estimated a drastically higher 42 million. The folks at Hulu aren’t making specific claims, but according to the New York Times, it’s unhappy with the Nielsen numbers. Fox, being a TV network, already knows how shoddy Nielsen numbers can be, and certainly has accurate numbers internally from Hulu, as Fox owns a large percentage of the company. So they know things that mere mortals don’t.

This also suggests why Fox is holding off on episode 13, “Epitath One”. They’re certainly holding it for the DVD to goose sales, but they may even hold it for Hulu just to prove a point to Nielsen.
