New Images of Davros’ Return to ‘Doctor Who’

A new pair of images making the rounds online would seem to add some color to recent reports confirming the return of Doctor Who villain Davros to the hit science-fiction television series.

While many Who fans had already guessed that the creator of the Daleks would be making a return (citing the final moments of this Doctor Who Season Four preview as evidence), newcomers should know that the the classic villain’s return is a big, big deal in the Doctor Who universe. It’s a big enough deal, in fact, that the threat is worthy of bringing back Torchwood‘s Captain Jack Harkness, as well as three (maybe four) present and former companions!

The Telegraph recently reported that Davros will make his return in the final two episodes of the season, and be played by Shakespearian actor Julian Bleach.

But, ummmm… what’s up with that red Dalek?

Random Video: Iron Man Meets Sesame Street

I’m not exactly sure what to make of this video mash-up of the pinball "counting song" from the children’s television series Sesame Street and clips from both old and new versions of the Iron Man cartoons — all I know is that it’s catchy.

 

 

I also know that it will now be stuck in your head, too.

Free Download of ‘The Middleman’ Pilot Episode

For those of you who are iTunes-enabled, the first episode of the new ABC Family series The Middleman, based on a comic book series by former Lost writer and producer Javier Grillo-Marxuach, is currently available as a free download. The series premieres this Monday, June 16, at 8 PM on ABC. 

The episode will only be available for a limited time, so make it a point to snag it as soon as you have a chance.

For those who aren’t familiar with The Middleman, the series chronicles the adventures of a secret agency whose slogan is "Fighting evil so that you don’t have to." The Viper Comics series was filled with well-scripted humor, crazy science-fiction gadgetry, over-the-top action and a never-ending supply of creepy-crawly tentacled things for the heroes to battle. After picking up a copy of the first volume a few years ago (there have been a total of three volumes published thus far), I became a big fan of the series — so the news that a television adaptation was in the works was a nice surprise indeed.

Grillo-Marxuach initially conceived the story of The Middleman as a television project, but Paul Dini convinced him to kick it off as a comic. The pilot episode of the series was written by Grillo-Marxuach, who also serves as executive producer of the series.

Iron Man Featured in New ‘Incredible Hulk’ Trailer

As most of you know by now, Marvel and Universal are taking the Incredible Hulk marketing into full swing this week, with one TV spot that may just be giving away a little too much.

Those of you who stayed till the end of Iron Man know that Sam Jackson pops up as fellow Marvel character Nick Fury, and rumor had it that we would be getting the same treatment with the next film from Marvel Studios, with Robert Downey Jr. rumored to appear as Tony Stark in the upcoming Incredible Hulk.

Well, it looks like the cat is out of the bag here, because according to the TV spot that hit the airwaves last night, Downey is definitely in the picture. It seems bizarre that the studios would spoil what could have been another big cameo, but such a move is likely indicative of the studios’ worries regarding the film — and an effort to ride the coattails of the biggest movie of 2008?

Check out the video below, but beware: If you would rather enjoy the surprise in the theater, stay away!

Netflix Adds Wealth of Comics Films and TV to Online Selection

incrediblehulk-7088548As part of its plan to take over the movie-watching world (or so I hear), Netflix has been increasing the numbers of movies and TV series offered online over its Watch Instantly system.

I had a bit of free time over the weekend to parse the offerings for fellow comic nerds/Netflix members to come up with a watch list (one note: you have to have Internet Explorer to use their viewer).

Not all are comics-related.

Comic Book Cameo: Green Lantern on ‘Bones’

In the season finale episode of Bones, "The Pain in the Heart," an upset Doctor Brennan burst into her FBI partner’s bathroom and made a startling discovery. Special Agent Seeley Booth likes to relax in a hot tub with a beer helmet and comic book. In this case, Green Lantern. Booth is played by David Boreanaz, who previously played the brooding vampire Angel in Joss Whedon’s celebrated TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and his solo spin-off series, Angel.

Macho tough guy, and ex-Marine Corps sniper, who would’ve guessed Booth is a closet geek. But there you have it:

Of course, that wasn’t just any comic book he was reading, either. It was Green Lantern #33, a Silver Age comic of Hal Jordan fighting Doctor Light. The issue featured a Gil Kane cover and a story titled "Wizard of the Light-Wave Weapons."

Booth explained the hat by saying, "Cold beer plus hot tub equals warm beer." But no defense was offered for the comic — or for the unreported crime of exposing that old comic to steam. That’s a definite no-no.

Happy Birthday: The Creeper

thecreeper-5583934Jack Ryder’s parentage certainly predicted his future—his father was the publisher of a successful union dispatch, while his mother suffered paranoid schizophrenia and died in an institution while Jack was still a child.

Growing up, Ryder followed in his father’s footsteps and became a television news reporter. Unfortunately, Ryder had a big mouth. Normally that would be an asset, but Ryder didn’t know when to shut up, and it cost him his job.

The network didn’t fire him, but they did demote him to working network security, a job Ryder found beneath him. He got his chance to prove himself again when mobsters kidnapped a scientist named Dr. Emil Yatz. Ryder guessed that Yatz would be held at the mob boss’ mansion. The boss was holding a masquerade party that night, so Ryder cobbled together a bizarre costume and snuck in.

He found Yatz, but was seriously injured in the process, and to save him Yatz injected Ryder with the serum he’d created. The scientist also hid the device the mobsters were after by concealing half of it inside Ryder’s wound, which then healed thanks to the serum’s effects.

The device can make matter appear and disappear instantly, allowing a soldier to walk into a place in civilian clothes and then have a uniform and full weapons with the touch of a button. In Ryder’s case it let him make his strange new costume appear and disappear. Ryder used his bizarre appearance, the strength and agility the serum granted him, his unhinged disregard for personal safety, and a disquieting laugh to bring the mobsters to justice.

They dubbed him "The Creeper," and so a new—and truly bizarre—superhero was born.

‘Farscape’ Comics on the Way

In the past few months, BOOM! Studios has had a spate of comics picked up for movie adaptations, but now that flow of comics-to-screen is reversing course. The publisher just announced a deal with the Jim Henson Company to create multiple four-issue series adapted from the sci fi TV show Farscape.

The show ran for four seasons before an abrupt cancellation, and the new comics look to expand on the untold parts of the story, according to the press release sent over from BOOM. The creative team hasn’t been announced, and the art at right is preliminary.

"Farscape took science fiction television to a new level and ushered in a whole host of shows that wouldn’t have been possible without Farscape‘s pioneering. As a long-time ‘Scaper’, I am incredibly excited to mine the dense universe of Farscape for new stories and adventures in comic book form," said BOOM! Marketing and Sales Director, Chip Mosher. "I watched the show as it came out, I bought the DVDs the day they hit the shelves, and I can’t frelling wait to publish these comics!"

The Farscape comic book series will be taking advantage of the upcoming webisodes to be produced by The Jim Henson Company in association with RHI Entertainment for SCIFI.COM. The webisode series will re-unite Farscape executive producer Brian Henson with creator Rockne S. O’Bannon.
