Hello, it's Mike Raub. Welcome to The Point where all parts of pop culture come together. We're the Miller's Outrageous Comedy with Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston. And what about that stripper scene? They're both here to talk about that.

Plus face off back for a new season and some big changes from Sci-Fi there. We talked to the folks behind it and see what's coming up. Plus the Wizard of Oz at a hospital. Let's get to The Point. This is The Point.

The Point radio. Get The Point radio. The reality competition show Face Off is back for season five on the Sci-Fi network. And this time eight special effects makeup artists are competing against eight returning contestants from past seasons of the show.

So why the change? I talked to host Mackenzie Westmore. You know for Face Off there, we are constantly with each season having to go big. Bigger and better and it was time for a little shake up. It's time for a little bit of twist.

Show judge and special effects artist Glenn Hentrich talked to me a little bit about the people that were chosen this year. Well I can't really say I'm surprised. Everyone that comes on the show regardless of how much they could see their family given week.

They're very impressive artists. You know trying to do anything from concept to application in two days is just insanely difficult. For anyone that's been on the show that got there, belongs there. So it was sort of just a mixed bag of people.

By playing everyone it's time for different seasons represented. And there's plenty of guest artists coming along as well as Mackenzie explained. We have some amazing guests coming in this year. The episode one starts off with Catherine Hardwick from Twilight, Director of Twilight. She comes in for the very first foundation challenge which is a masquerade ball.

We also have joining us in that first episode the Heroes of Cosplay which is the new docuseries on Sci-Fi. We also have Bill Corso who comes in. He's an Academy Award winning makeup artist. He gives the contestants some advice on their first spotlight challenge.

And then as far as throughout the season we've got Kevin Grievous, Lynn Shane. We have Jordie Shell. We have Elvira. We have Vali O'Reilly. Some really good industry people, some amazing industry people actually.

And some other fun ones along the way as well. We have Dave Salmoni of Animal Planet. He comes in for a special challenge that it's an animal-human hybrid. That one was a lot of fun. Going into five seasons, Face Off is almost a mainstay on the Sci-Fi network.

And I talked to Glenn a little bit about the impact it's had on this type of television. I think that perhaps part of the success of our show is something that I've been on so many episodics and films in the past and I've heard information that happened in the production meeting. So often the case, especially with television shows, we're looking for a way to engage

younger audiences and even with Sci-Fi and these fantasy art-based shows that we're trying to get similar with children enjoying the show and the parents can watch with them and our show magically does that. The pulling back of the curtain allows for the children. I mean, when your kids think about it, you sit through a boring two-hour off-and-wretched

film to get to the one shot of the monster at the end of the thing. Or so you get to see 13 monsters in an hour of television. So kids love the visuals and which is the only thing that excites them about the art, which I think is the greatest impact we have. Getting out of conventions and doing celebrity signings and things again and again and again

and again, I mean families who've never been to a horror convention. They're just there because some of them show us there and they're there because the child wanted to come, the child is now in a sculpting and painting all because of the show. And then I think the parents get sucked into the competition aspect of it and then there you have it, something that people can watch with the children and they're so grateful

for that. That's really the biggest aspect of our show that contributes to success. Anne McKenzie's cut on that. For me, I think it's what audiences really respond to and I agree with you, Glenn. It definitely is that family viewing is what's building more and more each season that we're

seeing. As far as reinventing the wheel a little bit in the reality competition world, there's an instant gratification of that transformation. And I think that's what the viewers really love to see is, you know, whereas with many great reality competition shows, you really, you can't taste the food, you can't try on

the dress, but with us, you get to see that instant transformation within the hour of the show. Another cool aspect of this season will be the return of McKenzie's father to the show. And I ask her how that all worked out. Well, yes, my dad is back and, you know, it's always a thrill for me because I absolutely

love and adore my dad and to get to work with him, you know, a couple times a week at Mofu Lab is just the greatest gift a daughter could have. He brings back his expertise and what he can do to help them to improve their sculpts, their designs, their color palettes, whatever it is that they have questions on or the needs of.

You know, my dad and I were discussing at the show the other day that it's so fascinating to both of us that as we walk through the lab, nine times out of ten, what looks amazing in the lab and what looks horrible in the lab always ends up reversing. It blows our mind. I mean, I would say almost to a tee every challenge.

It's not always, but majority of the time it's just incredible what because I get to be there for every single day. I get to be there for the reveal, the lab and the elimination. And my dad does show up behind the scenes for the elimination to see so that he can help whoever was in the bottom and didn't go home, he can help him that next week to

say this is where you went wrong. So what I we are all blown away with is that to my dad and I to see that change, to see how something that can just look so terribly wrong in the lab and he gives them the advice and then whether they use it or they don't. And the times we've seen them really follow through and either change some of the sculpting

or change what the color scheme is going to be. It's really incredible. It's amazing to see how things can turn out. Catch new episodes of Face Off every Tuesday on Sci-Fi and you could always see more at Sci-Fi.com.

Let's get into the latest in pop culture. Not sure what we would call it but I guess phenomenon kind of fits and after some very decent ratings and a massive, massive splash on social media with a couple of different showings on the Sci-Fi network. Sharknado has also posted some pretty good box office numbers and a very limited release

with some midnight cult movie showings in a few cities. Some theaters report even adding an extra showing to accommodate all the people and now we're set for the next one. Sharknado 2 is scheduled to be released next summer and it's been named with a Twitter campaign that was put together by Sci-Fi.

The sequel will be called Sharknado 2 the second one. There are more rumors out there that Alec Baldwin might be entering the talk show circuit. Reports are that the former 30 Rockstar is in talks with MSNBC for a prime time show. There would more than likely be a morning slot on that network. A few months back when Jay Leno and Jimmy Fallon were switching around there were talks

that Baldwin might take over the Carson Daly show last call. However, that did not come about and that show was renewed. Meanwhile Baldwin has been honing his skills as his interviewer with his weekly podcast called Here's the Thing. CBS is reportedly putting in development a show called Dorothy.

It's a drama project from the folks who do elementary. Based on The Wizard of Oz they say it is a medical soap based in New York City with real life situations that are inspired by characters and themes from The Wizard of Oz. Producers of the CW hit series Arrow are letting a lot of information out there that makes this upcoming season look pretty interesting.

For example, they tweeted a picture that involved metamorpho. It was a van that had on the side of it metamorpho chemicals and that could mean that character might be coming to at least one episode in the news season. We do know there's a black canary on the way that is not quite the one we expected. And of course as we told you a couple of weeks back there is that episode that will introduce

the Flash character to the Arrow universe and hopefully make it possible to spin that character off into another successful series. As we get said to log another month in what's been a positive year for comic book sales things are not quite as rosy out on the newsstands. And sales of magazines dropped another 10% during the first half of 2013 compared with

sales in 2012 as well. And some particular titles were down even more than that. People was down almost 12%, US Weekly down well over 16% in sales and Vanity Fair down 11% while Cosmopolitan lost almost 24% of their audience. Digital versions of popular magazines haven't really saved the day.

They were up only 3.3% in the first half of the year. Next time somebody says to you wow everything's going digital you can say it sure is and here's some of the numbers to prove that. Look back at 2010 for example there were 15 million tablet PCs around. Now by 2017 it's estimated there'll be 905 million of those on the planet.

Meaning one in every eight humans on earth will have a tablet at that particular point. This year alone 122 million tablets were sold. Now the cloud of that silver lining DVD sales dropped 13% again this year. And rentals in places like Redbox for example were also down about 10%. More than likely based on the huge success of Summer of Under the Dome, CBS has ordered

another Steven Spielberg project. It's called Extent and it sets it to air just like Under the Dome did in the summertime during next year. It's set for another panic at the comic shop this time with DC's Villains Month. As you know they announced that certain titles would have 3D covers.

Well those covers will be allocated meaning the retailers will only get a percentage of what they've ordered. There'll be plenty of the regular issues to go around but 3D covers are going to be pretty scarce especially the Batman titles. The ones that have been in demand so far with retailers trying to find more copies of include

Batman number 23.1 with The Joker, Justice League number 23.1 with Darkseid, Detective Comics number 23.1 with Poison Ivy and Justice League of America number 7.1 with Deadshot. Better talk with your retailer right now to make sure you get the ones that you want. Plenty of buzz everywhere about the new Doctor Peter Capaldi announced a few days ago by the BBC.

Some fans like it, some fans don't but that's to be expected. If you want to weigh in, well here's a little something to add to your evidence pile. BBC will be running Torchwood Children of the Earth again in the near future. Capaldi had a role in that particular show and I'll give you a chance to see him on camera in a Doctor Who-like environment.

Sales lists are always important. We like to look at the ones in the comic stores as well but it's also important to look with graphic novels and what's selling in the regular bookstores like Barnes and Noble. Usually a lot of manga titles turn up in there but it's an interesting list when you look at the ones from July.

Starting at number 10 with Blue Exorcist from Viz Media Walking Dead Compendium Volume 2 is at number 9. Saga Volume 1 is at number 8 from Image at number 7. DC Comics The Ultimate Character Guide at number 6 Pacific Rim Tales from the Year 0 from Legendary Comics.

Another Walking Dead title, The Compendium Volume 1 comes in at number 5. Naruto Volume 61 from Viz is at number 4. Saga Volume 2 from Image is at number 3. Walking Dead Volume 18 is the second best selling graphic novel and the ones that sold the most in bookstores.

Sailor Moon Volume 12. The R rated comedy We're the Millers is a film that's filled with well no small amount of outrageous behavior. But I talked to stars Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeigas and they assured me that it all comes to a good end.

Yeah well they basically find their family. They sort of out of this crazy situation they kind of all find the soft spot in each other and find partnership which is what everybody's hopefully looking for. Yeah. Companionship.

Dr. Phil says you got to fake it until you feel it. You know? So they faked it and they ended up feeling it. Yeah. Hopefully the audience feels the same way.

Jason told me why he thought the cast seemed to work together so well. It's the reality show model. I mean it's you know put people in the same town in the middle of North Carolina for four months. Give them a job.

We're not working at a t-shirt factory. We're making a movie and then yeah then you end up you know loving each other and liking each other and hating each other and getting annoyed with each other and everything that the movie goes through. So it's not so much like probably the process of making a movie and faking it you know as

an actor is probably more being used to having done other movies and having to get you know get that across. Just the familial aspect or thing that occurs when you hang out with people so long. And of course if you've seen the trailers there's Jennifer's stripper scene. How'd she react doing that?

It was a little uncomfortable at first but then you get in because you're used to it but I was doing all the rehearsals with Alone with Denise and then all of a sudden you're on the set and there's three cameras and a bunch of cat crew and yeah it's a little intimidating at first. And what made it look so easy?

It's Jennifer Aniston and we're the Millers in theaters right now. Your pop culture channel. Here's what's cool. As summer begins to wind down you got a few days to get away. If you do you want to load up on some great comics.

Well here's what's going to be waiting for you in the comic shops this week. Halo comes to Dark Horse. The popular franchise gets a new publisher and a new miniseries as well. It begins this week with Halo initiation. Castro City's third issue is in from DC and there's a Trinity tie-in this week as well

Justice League of America number seven. IDW brings back the 100 penny press books meaning you get a great comic for only a dollar and this time it's the first issue of Star Trek. The one that actually began to bridge the gap between the two movies and again it's available for only a buck.

Also from IDW the Amelia Cole miniseries has gotten a lot of press and a lot of folks have a lot of great things to say about it. If you feel like you've been wanting to catch up here's your chance with Amelia Cole and the Unknown World graphic novel collection this week. The Thunder Agents return this time to a new home at IDW with the first issue and a Thunder

Agents classic straight paperback as well in case you've still missed any of those stories. And X-Files season 10 number one gets a second printing too as well. From Image, Ghosted gets a second printing for the first issue and there's a new one of those number two out this week. New issue of Walking Dead number 113 and Marvel Dexter number one gets a second printing

this week. And Marvel's Infinity event kicks off with the first issue of Infinity and a bunch more including some tie-ins to come soon. Grab a checklist so you can keep track and finally from Dynamite the Shadow Green Horned Dark Knights series, the one that teams the two heroes together, a lot of folks say it's

possibly the best incarnation of either of those characters. It gets a second issue this week and the first one should be pretty easy to find as well. All this and more in comic stores near you. Hey, you're traveling around?
