Review: ‘Dark Blue’

I have to admit to not being sure how much I like TNT’s [[[Dark Blue]]]. The series about an undercover unit operating in Los Angeles debuted last summer and for ten weeks my wife and I kept watching and wondering if it would get better. Slowly, and slyly, we found ourselves getting interested in some of the characters and kept watching.

The series opened with 3.5 million people watching the pilot episode but by the tenth episode, it shed just over half the viewers. Still, TNT had enough faith in the premise and Jerry Bruckheimer’s production savvy to bring it back for a second season starting August 4. Of note to ComicMix readers is the addition of Tricia Helfer to the cast as Special Agent Alex Rice.

Warner Home Video is showing a tad less faith by making the first season available tomorrow as an exclusive only at the WBShop.com and TNT.tv. Additionally, the ten episodes, on four discs for $24.95, comes without any additional features or commentary. We get just a short preview, without any substance, of the forthcoming season.

The show is built around Dylan McDermott’s Carter Shaw, who runs his operation away from police headquarters and does whatever it takes to complete his assignment. As a result, he pisses of his commanders and his team and raises the question how damaged a cop is he? McDermott broods exceedingly well, but without much of a character to portray, the harsh manner feels one-dimensional. Even his big story, the season finale “A Shot in the Dark”, doesn’t do enough to round him out.

We wound up far more interested in Ty Curtis (Omari Hardwick), a married cop trying to juggle how deep his undercover role can go and his commitment to his newlywed spouse. Dean Bendis (Logan Marshall-Green) is the one who goes too deep undercover and is only now beginning to willingly come up for air and sees how empty his own life has become. Then there’s juvenile delinquent Jamie Allen (Nicki Aycox) who escaped her criminal life in Detroit and faked a new identity to restart, becoming a cop who winds up recruited into the unit. She’s forced to use her real name and background in “Betsy”, a revelation that probably should have been saved for later, after we really got to know Jamie.

The stories have been the weak link as you care less about the cases and more about how the leads handle the tension. Each episode is self-contained and you’re told they’ve spent weeks building up a new role, infiltrating the criminal organization du jour, but you never saw those moments. We’re usually brought in when something goes wrong or the case is about to be closed.

The writing is solid if uninspired throughout and it lacks the high octane action of Bruckheimer’s CBS crime series. Still, you find yourself rooting for these cops to do the right thing, avoid temptation, avoid getting their cover blown, and avoid the interpersonal complications that can cloud their judgment.

With Helfer arriving next month, we can hope she stirs things up a bit and inspire stronger character-based tales.

Jason Isaacs Muses on being the eternal Ra’s al Ghul

Jason Isaacs, renowned for his villainous turn as Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter films, assumes another dark iconic role as the voice of Ra’s al Ghul in Batman: Under the Red Hood, the latest entry in the ongoing series of DC Universe Animated Original PG-13 Movies coming July 27, 2010 to Blu-ray, DVD, OnDemand and for Download.

Isaacs, who portrays Malfoy in five Harry Potter films, is well known for his lead role on the Showtime series Brotherhood, as well as starring opposite Mel Gibson in the revolutionary war adventure, The Patriot. The British actor has also racked up credits in films like Armageddon, Black Hawk Down, Peter Pan, Grindhouse, DragonHeart and Green Zone; TV series including The West Wing, Entourage and The State Within (for which he received a Golden Globe nomination); and in the voiceover realm in everything from documentary narration and commercial advertisements to video games and the popular animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender,

In Batman: Under the Red Hood, Isaacs gives Batman’s nemesis Ra’s al Ghul a sympathetic twist as the villain attempts to right his own wrongs and help Batman in his efforts against both Red Hood and the Joker. Isaacs is an integral part of an all-star cast that includes Bruce Greenwood (Star Trek), Jensen Ackles (Supernatural), Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) and John DiMaggio (Futurama).

Isaacs splits his time between the UK and the US, but still found a few moments to chat about his latest animation voiceover role, his yearning for an actual super power, and his childhood addiction to comic books.

QUESTION: This isn’t really the Ra’s al Ghul we’re accustomed to seeing – what’s the nutshell synopsis of his part in Batman: Under the Red Hood?

JASON ISAACS: This role is a bit unusual for Ra’s al Ghul as he’s been Batman’s nemesis a lot in the past.  But this time he is actually full of regret for a mistake that he has made, and his inability to control the Joker.  A lot of what happens for Ra’s in this story is him explaining to Batman how things went so badly awry, and how Robin ended up quite so dead. Classic Comics Press Adds ‘Big Ben Bolt’ and ‘Cisco Kid’

cover_flat-inddClassic Comics Press is the little engine that could, a small operation that has produced lovely editions of many series, including The Heart of Juliet Jones and Mary Perkins On Stage. Publisher Charles Pelto and collections editor James Gauthier yesterday talked about those books and today, we continue to examine their plans. 

ComicMix: Irwin Hasen’s Dondi is quite unlike the others and is a forgotten gem. What’s the appeal for you?

Charles Pelto: I did it because of Irwin Hasen. Roy Thomas suggested I talk to Irwin and we instantly hit it off. Irwin is a hell-of-a-guy and after meeting him I wanted to do it for no other reason than to honor Irwin’s work. I would have liked to continue past Volume 2 but the sales just don’t justify it. But I was able to do two volumes, people seemed to enjoy it. And it’s too bad; the storylines in what would have been the third volume are some of Irwin’s best work.

James Gauthier: I remember growing up and reading it in the New York Daily News. Dondi was always a favorite. Since it has never been reprinted before I never had the opportunity to see the early strips from the 1950’s and so putting the books together helped answer many questions that I had. I always wondered how Dondi got to this country, how he came to be adopted and what his relationship was with Mrs. McGowan.

CMix: Irwin’s a terrific guy and quite the character. What’s his take on seeing these in print?

Pelto:  Irwin loves it. I happened to be there when Irwin saw the first copy and the look on his face was well worth the price of admission.

Gauthier: He was thrilled that people are able to experience the strip again, and it was great to be able to reprint the strip and see his reaction to it. So many of the great comic strip artists have passed away before they could see their work reprinted and preserved for future generations to enjoy. Superman & Batman Repeat Appearance on Next Animated Feature

As has been unofficially discussed on the net, Warner Premiere continues to exploit DCE’s major heroes. The details on the next release were officially unveiled today in the following press release.

BURBANK, CA, (June 29, 2010) – To save an earthbound Kryptonian, the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight unite once again – this time to battle the powerful forces of Darkseid – in Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, the ninth entry in the popular, ongoing series of DC Universe Animated Original PG-13 Movies coming September 28, 2010 from Warner Premiere, DC Comics and Warner Bros. Animation. The highly anticipated, full-length film will be distributed by Warner Home Video as a Special Edition Blu-Ray™ and 2-Disc Special Edition DVD as well as single disc DVD. The film will also be available On Demand and for Download.

Fan favorites Tim Daly (Private Practice) and Kevin Conroy (China Beach) return to their seminal roles as Superman and Batman, respectively. The celebrity-laden guest cast is headed by Andre Braugher (Men of a Certain Age) as the daunting Darkseid. Classic Comics Press Continues Reprinting Great Forgotten Strips

Although some of the more familiar comic strips have garnered tremendous press as a part of IDW’s Library of Comics, some of the best strips being collected have been overlooked. For the last several years, Classic Comics Press has been re-presenting Leonard Starr’s Mary Perkins and Stan Drake’s The Heart of Juliet Jones and these are just as deserving of readers’ time and attention.

Publisher Charles Pelto has turned a labor of love into a business that is surviving despite tough economic times. Along with James Gauthier, he has been slowly growing his operation, adding two new series this year. ComicMix had to the chance to chat with the two and in part one, we look at CCP’s origins and why these two strips launched the line.

ComicMix: Charles, how long have you been interested in comic strips?

Charles Pelto: I learned how to read from the daily and Sunday funnies. In the early 50’s there were a lot more papers available in Detroit, where I grew up. I delivered the Detroit Free Press (with Mary Perkins), but also regularly read The Detroit News, and a number of suburban papers. Around the age of 15 to 17 I used to ride my bike to a newspaper in Utica, MI that printed Secret Agent Corrigan. The paste-up guy used to save me the proofs and I’d ride my bike up there every other week or so to pick them up. For a while I was a bit fanatical, I started receiving papers from all over the country just to get a particular strip. It drove my father crazy.

CMix: And what led you to form Classic Comics Press? When was this?

Pelto: I left comics for a long time, sometime around my early 30s. For some reason my interest in comic art was rekindled about eight years ago and I started buying stuff off of eBay. For a while there I was buying lots of comics but to be honest they were boring the hell out of me. Things like Local Heroes, Preacher, 100 Bullets, Criminal and the like really turned me on, but the normal, run of the mill comic book just didn’t grab me. I still enjoy a good Batman story and I like what they’ve been doing with Superman off and on, but for the most part I still don’t buy comics. After a while, I just naturally gravitated towards the comic strips I’d read as a kid.

CMix:  How did you decide on which strips to pursue? Right now there’s a lot of competition between IDW’s Library, and efforts from NBM, Fantagraphics, and Hermes Press.

Pelto: At first it was only On Stage. I was buying all the various reprints out there, as well as Sundays, and what dailies appeared. I stumbled across Jim’s email address on the Rules of Attraction website and contacted him. Jim happens to have become Leonard’s archivist and he started sending me binders containing a year’s worth of On Stage from the beginning.

As I continued to read through the years I could not believe that no one had taken a serious interest in reprinting the strip from the beginning. So being the impetuous fool that I am, I contacted the offices of Tribune Media Services and asked if the rights were available. From that point it took about a year and a half to actually get a contract.

With Juliet Jones, it was a natural compliment to On Stage. (more…)

Jeph Loeb Named EVP, Head of Television at Marvel

New York, NY – June 28,  2010 – Marvel Entertainment, LLC announced today that it has appointed Jeph Loeb as Executive Vice President, Head of Television, a newly created division of Marvel Entertainment.  In this new role, Mr. Loeb will work alongside Dan Buckley, Publisher & President of the Print, Animation & Digital Divisions, Marvel Worldwide, Inc., to translate Marvel’s popular characters and stories to the television medium, in both live-action and animation formats. Bruce Timm sets the record straight on DC Universe Animated Original Movies

Who’s under the Red Hood? Bruce Timm knows, but he’s not telling. However, he answers a bevy of other questions in a Q&A focused on the July 27 release of Batman: Under the Red Hood, the latest entry in the ongoing series of DC Universe Animated Original PG-13 Movies.

Batman: Under the Red Hood is just the latest finished product to come from Timm’s canon of super hero vehicles at Warner Bros. Animation. A veritable legend among the creative forces in animation today, Timm has spearheaded the elevation of DC Comics’ characters to new heights of animated popularity and introduced generations of new fans to the characters via landmark television series and made-for-DVD films. The latter task includes the creation of the current series of DC Universe Animated Original Movies, which now number eight in total and each has been greeted with critical acclaim and nifty sales.

Superman Can Come to Your Home Town

As reported this morning in USA Today, DC Comics is hosting a contest tied to the arrival of J. Michael Straczynski as the Man of Steel’s new writer. As Superman walks from coast to coast in his quest to understand America, readers can lobby for the hero to pay their hometown a visit.

This is a stunt reminiscent of a long-running feature in Captain Marvel’s 1940s adventures as he paid visits to towns with prominent newsstand wholesalers, attempting to boost circulation around the country.

Here’s the formal announcement:

New York, June 23, 2010– Starting in July 2010, coinciding with the 700th issue of Superman, DC Comics will be celebrating this remarkable anniversary of America’s greatest hero with a historic journey…not to alien worlds or distant galaxies, but through the streets, roads, highways, homes, farms, suburbs, and inner cities of America. And America itself, in the person of those very real places, is invited to the party.
 
Beginning with the city of Philadelphia, Superman will walk across America, a journey that is expected to take most of a year. He will pass through Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, California, Oregon and Washington. Along the way, Superman will be passing through real towns, real cities, real neighborhoods. And your town, your city, your neighborhood may be among those chosen for his historic journey. Superman will literally pass through your town as visualized in the pages of his book. Review: ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars Character Encyclopedia’

clone-wars-encyclopedia1-3120930Ever since it was mentioned in the original [[[Star Wars]]], fans have always been curious about the events of the Clone Wars. It was a never a factor in the original film trilogy, just a nifty throwaway line to add depth to George Lucas’ mythology. Then we got to finally learn of the wars’ origins in [[[Attack of the Clones]]] (2002) and [[[Revenge of the Sith]]] (2005).

But people wanted to learn more and Lucasfilm happily obliged, first with Genndy Tartakovsky’s marvelous animated series, which ran from 2003–2005 and then the more recent 3D CGI series which has been running since 2008. Character designer Kilian Plunkett referred to the imaginative work of Tartakovsky when creating the look of this series and it visually is a good fit with the live-action films.

With a sprawling cast and campaigns occurring throughout the Galactic Empire, fans, casual and diehard alike, could benefit from a scorecard. DK comes to the rescue this month with [[[Star Wars: The Clone Wars Character Encyclopedia]]]. Measuring 9.25 x 6.25 inches, its at a smaller trim size than the more recent pop culture offerings.

There are 204 character profiles, a page apiece, covering the events of the first two seasons, all 44 episodes inclusive. Each page has a full-figure shot, vital statistics, some call outs to denote details and short paragraphs placing the character into context. Apparently, the content does not reflect events or characteristics from the first animated series.

Yes, the series airs on the Cartoon Network which has a younger audience, but since the book is described as being aimed for 8-17 years old, it also offers far too little in the way of detail. The uncredited writers should have given us some overview of the era, a brief timeline for events, and maybe a clue as to where each character made a first appearance.

Instead, we get surface details offering no greater understanding of the people and their place in the wars. Padme Amidala’s page, for example, tell us she is secretly married to Anakin and likes to look for the good in people. Nothing about her upbringing, her evolving relationship with Ani and other details to make her a more interesting and better understood character.

The CGI frame captures from episodes along with selected poses are a little too dark so details and expressions are needlessly obscured.

Much as we expected better from Lucas’ more recent efforts, so too have I come to expect more from DK. This book is pleasant to skim through but makes you want far more than is offered.

Review: ‘The Illusionist’

Stagecraft gained special attention in 2005 when Neil Burger adapted Steve Millahuser’s story as The Illusionist, and weeks later Christopher Nolan brought us [[[The Prestige]]]. Both were engaging, entertaining movies as much about the characters as it was about nineteenth century magic.

Millhauser, a Pulitzer Prize winner, wrote “Eisenheim the Illusionist” in 1989 and explored an ever-growing fascination with stage magic in Vienna, prompting competitors to try and top one another to satisfy an eager and demanding audience. It was an era when people still believed more often than not in the supernatural, and took the magical feats at face value.

Eisenheim (Edward Norton) is a man jealously guarding his past from the world around him, but has also gained a fascinated fan in the form of police chief Inspector Uhl (Paul Giamatti). Uhl was also ordered to expose the man as a fraud by Crown Prince Leopold (Rufus Sewell). When Eisenheim is introduced to the Duchess Sophie (Jessica Biel), he recognizes her as the true love of his childhood, complicating his life in new and exciting ways. The infatuation infuriates the jealous prince who wants Eisenheim destroyed.

The story was a terrific road map for Burger, who had previously made a documentary, to enter feature film making. He nicely visualizes the Vienna of the past (thank you Prague), creating an atmosphere appropriate to the mystic world of the [[[Illusionist]]]. The screen adaptation nicely works with multiple themes such as one’s place in society, faith versus reality, order versus lawlessness.

Burger also seems to have a nice handle on actors, coaxing nuanced performances from his talented cast. At first, you could have trouble with Biel as a gentle upper crust woman, but she gives what may be her best work to date. Giamatti is superb, bordering on the obsessive while Norton is steely. All mix together nicely, with Sewell proving to be the straw that stirs the drink and keeps things moving.

Nolan’s offering gained more notice and had bigger stars attached but this is the far more satisfying movie and well worth seeing again or a first time if you missed it.

The movie transfers nicely to Blu-ray and given the dim lighting and moody set pieces, it sharpens up well, accompanied by a nice audio track. We’re lucky the new edition is offered as a combo set since the only extras can be found on the standard DVD, all intact from its initial release.

There is a nine minute Making Of featurette which is far less interesting than its subject matter and a perfunctory Jessica Biel Interview. Instead, the best part is Burger’s commentary, talking of how he expanded Millhauser’s story for the film which meant adding in romance and a murder mystery.  Burger has made only one film since, [[[The Lucky Ones]]], and I wish he were more productive.

The set is definitely worth watching and probably owning since it holds up to repeated viewing.
