I got an IM from a friend recently: “You’ve heard of Zumba, right? Dance fitness?”
Me: “Not really… why?”
Her: “Somehow, I went from Zumba Fitness to Zombie Fitness. And now I desperately want to see a zombie fitness video.”
So this is for you, kiddo.
You’ve probably
heard of Fred Phelps and his Topeka Kansas Westboro Baptist Church. He and his followers have well-earned a reputation as the most notorious, tasteless bigots in America. They get their thrills by showing up in force at funerals to protest the lifestyle or the politics of the diseased. These un-American vultures prefer going to funerals of gay American servicemen who were killed in combat overseas. They also protest at the funerals of those who “tolerate”
homosexuality. Just ask the family of the late Meet the Press host Tim Russert, who also committed the additional
crime of being Catholic.
It turns out they don’t like comic book fans either.
These astonishing assholes will be showing up in force on Thursday, July 22 at the San Diego Comic-Con from 1:15 pm to 2 p.m. I guess they’re on a tight schedule.
Why, you might ask. Here’s what it says on their website and, no, I’m not going to give you the link. You’ll have to Google this latest bit of hate-thy-neighbor.
“They have turned comic book characters into idols, and worship them they do! Isaiah 2:8: Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made. Isaiah 2:9: And the mean man boweth down, and the great man humbleth himself: therefore forgive them not.
“It is time to put away the silly vanities and turn to God like you mean it. The destruction of this nation is imminent – so start calling on Batman and Superman now, see if they can pull you from the mess that you have created with all your silly idolatry.”
Previous to this announcement, my contempt for these lowlife scum knew no bounds. Now it’s actually gone into the 4th dimension: I hate their fathers for getting all liquored up, going home, raping their mothers and producing a movement unseen since the Reichstag fire.
But that’s just me. What do you think?

guy on earth who should ask this question… but… hell, is nothing sacred?
We’ve got us a big ol’ auction coming up here in New York
this coming week. Christie’s is going to bang off some stuff once owned by Roy
Rogers and Dale Evans.
OK, some of you know where this is going.
The cool stuff comes from the now-closed Roy Rogers and Dale
Evans Museum in Branson, Missouri, the latest in a long line of celebrity
failures in that remote resort town. They’ll be auctioning off Roy’s silver
dollar studded 1964 Bonneville convertible, worth maybe $150,000.
They’re also hammering the hand-drawn music for Roy’s theme song, “Happy Trails”
and they think it’ll go for maybe $500. That seems cheap. And, sigh, so does this.
Yep, they’re auctioning off Roy Rogers faithful companion, Trigger.
Back in 1965 Roy took him to the taxidermist and had his old pal stuffed and
mounted. That’s kind of… I dunno… weird.
And in an icky sort of way, too. I mean, stuffing your horse. Hell, I grew up
watching that horse on teevee! He even had his own comic book! It outsold damn
near everything published by DC at the time!
At least Roy and Dale didn’t live to see Trigger go under
the gavel. And I do not think they were stuffed.

Clifford Meth is not a nice guy.
That doesn’t mean he’s not a good guy. Anybody who puts as much time as he has helping out comic book creators in need, like William Messner-Loebs, Dave Cockrum, and most recently Gene Colan, is clearly a decent human being (and yes, he’s also written things for ComicMix in the past).
But he’s not a nice guy. He’s clearly spent a certain amount of his life contemplating what Nietchze had in mind when he spoke of the abyss. He’s a card-carrying Neutral Good. He’s passionate, acerbic when needed, and his writing has a taste like sulfur and gunpowder.
Which brings us to the new short story collection, [[[The Whorehouse Madrigals (of Hank Magitz)]]] from Clifford’s publishing house, Aardwolf Publishing.
I tried to not be the guy here reviewing it, I consider Cliff a friend and didn’t want the conflict of interest. But two people I handed it to wrote back and said that the book just wasn’t for them. The hasteed to point out the book wasn’t bad, but definitely not to their taste. I couldn’t argue with them.
Now that said, I think it’s a funny book. But if the title isn’t a tipoff, it’s not a book that can be shared with your maiden aunt. Think of the tone of these stories as like Harlan Ellison, but mean. James Thurber this ain’t.
To give you an idea, here’s an adaptation of one of the stories inside, “Korean Math”– and for ghu’s sake, it is in no way safe for work. But if you have a black sense of humor, you’ll like it. Following a frustrating “massage incident,” author Hank Magitz calls

When the world is in trouble, leave it to us nerd to give up some hard earned cash for cool causes. With the gulf coast being drenched in more oil than it takes to straighten Harry Osbourne’s coif… Venture Bros. color-stylist Carly Monardo made a call to action for web cartoonists to donate original art to be auctioned off on eBay, with 100% of the profits going to the Colbert Nation Gulf of America Fund.
The first auctions went live on Monday, July 5th, with new 5 or more artists being added each day. Response has been extremely positive and fans seem enthusiastic to bid on their favorite creators’ work. The final set of auctions will launch tomorrow, July 9th (Friday). Each individual auction lasts for a total of 10 days.
Monardo was inspired to organize the event after seeing how successful her colleague Thomas Bayne’s animation auction had been. Bayne’s auction (which has already raised thousands of dollars for the Gulf Of America Fund) featured original production drawings from Venture Bros., many signed by creator Jackson Public and members of the show’s cast.
The Web-Comics Auction has attracted talents from around the world, including fan-favorites Kate Beaton (“Hark! A Vagrant“), Anthony Clark (“Nedroid“), Christopher Hastings (“The Adventures Of Dr. McNinja“), and Michael “Mookie” Terracciano (“Dominic Deegan: Oracle For Hire“). There are even contributions from non-cartoonists, such as Brandon Bird, who was recently profiled in Newsweek for his bizarre celebrity portraits.

If at first you don’t succeed, take the animated role.
Therein lies the lesson of Thomas Jane’s quest to play the role of comic book anti-hero Jonah Hex. The star of HBO’s popular series Hung once lobbied to play the theatrical role of Jonah Hex and, though he fell short in that attempt, Jane has found another path to the character as the disfigured cowboy’s voice in the DC Showcase Original Short, Jonah Hex.
The all-new, animated Jonah Hex appears as a companion piece on the upcoming Special Edition Blu-Ray and 2-Disc Special Edition DVD release of Batman: Under the Red Hood, the latest entry in the ongoing series of DC Universe Animated Original PG-13 Movies coming from Warner Home Video on July 27, 2010.
In the short, the tough-as-nails bounty hunter always gets his man – until someone else gets to him first. In this case it’s a murderous madam who wants to steal more than just bounty from Jonah Hex. The animated short Jonah Hex is based on a story from the award-winning comic series, and scripted by renowned author Joe Lansdale. Jane leads a voice cast that includes Linda Hamilton (The Terminator), Michelle Trachtenberg (Mercy, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Michael Rooker (Days of Thunder) and Jason Marsden (Spirited Away).
A lover of both comic books and westerns, Jane felt a certain kinship to the character – and the result is clearly evident in his vocal depiction of Hex and the emotional range of the performance. Jane was the ultimate perfectionist throughout the recording process, never settling for good takes when great was attainable. From the original recording session through follow-up ADR, the give-and-take between Jane and the filmmakers – including executive producer Bruce Timm – was quite collaborative in achieving the final presentation.
Jane currently headlines HBO’s Hung, though he’s active in numerous other projects, including films being developed by his own production company, Raw Studios. Coincidentally, Jane founded Raw Studios with Timothy Bradstreet and Steve Niles, the screenwriter of the first DC Showcase short, The Spectre. Jane’s directorial debut, Raw Studios’ Dark Country, continues to play to rave reviews and enthusiastic crowds at conventions and festivals around the world.
No stranger to the fanboy/comics realm, Jane co-wrote his own comic book miniseries, Bad Planet. He played the title character in the 2004 version of The Punisher, starred in Mutant Chronicles, and had roles in both The Crow: City of Angels and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He has drawn widespread acclaim for many of his non-fanboy roles, especially his turn as Mickey Mantle in the HBO film, 61*. His numerous credits run the gamut from Magnolia, Deep Blue Sea and The Thin Red Line to Boogie Nights and Face/Off.
After shooting all morning on the set of Hung, Jane came into the recording studio to put some final touches on his Jonah Hex performance – and to chat about his attraction to anti-heroes, his adoration of comics, and how he came to (literally) rub elbows with Ringo Starr. This is what Thomas Jane says …
QUESTION: This isn’t your first run at the role of Jonah Hex, is it?
THOMAS JANE: I’ve been a fan of the comic and the character and that whole western world. I’m glad to be voicing the role, and I actually wanted to do the live-action film. When they were casting the movie, I had a guy come and do my makeup, we took some photos and sent them off to Akiva Goldman. I know some of those photos have leaked out online. They had a different director at the time, and Josh Brolin had just hit with the Coen brothers movie, so he had pick of the litter. And that spelled outski for me.
