Frank Frazetta, 1928 – 2010

ff-211-8978843According to biographer / publisher Russ Cochran, legendary illustrator and comics artist Frank Frazetta passed away this morning.

Perhaps best known for his illustrations on the covers of the 1970s Conan paperbacks for Lancer Books and the 1960s Warren Magazines (Creepy, Eerie, Vampirella, Blazing Combat), Frazetta worked closely with EC artists Al Williamson and Angelo Torres as well as on various solo efforts for that and other publishers. He worked on The Shining Knight for DC Comics and the oft-reprinted jungle feature Thun’da created by Gardner Fox.

Frazetta spent years as Al Capp’s assistant – often, ghost – on the newspaper strip Lil Abner at the height of its popularity, where he first visualized the astonishingly sexy character Moonbeam McSwine. He went on to draw his own short-lived newspaper comic strip, Johnny Comet, and served as an assistant to Harvey Kurtzman and Will Elder on Playboy’s Little Annie Fanny. Kurtzman once referred to Frank as “drawing sexy muscles in places where women don’t ordinarily have muscles.”

Generally regarded as one of the premiere illustrators of the latter half of the 20th Century, Frank Frazetta’s work has been gathered in numerous collections and calendars. His work continues to be licensed for poster reproduction and for adaptation into comic books.

Monday Mix-Up: Iron Man 2 Hot 4 TV!

So you all saw Iron Man 2, and we here at ComicMix want to keep that Tony Stark buzz going! So, we did a little scouring of the net and found this lovely gem. We’re pretty sure Jarvis was recording this video in case Tony ever needed resuscitation while in his hot tub. Or maybe it Tony likes to watch his performance, ala American Psycho? We’re not entirely sure WHY this was recorded. OK, maybe somebody was just having fun with the recently released Iron Man: The Complete Animated Series… and mashed-up a little hot and steamy action.

Poor Rhodie.

Warner adds ‘Superman II’, ‘V’, ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ and More Genre Titles to DVD2Blu Program

Apparently, Warner Bros. has achieved success with their program of allowing people to upgrade from standard DVD to Blu-ray and has announced an expansion of the DVD2Blu program. The studio called our attention to the growing number of genre titles that ComicMix fans were most likely to be interested in exploring.

This program is a nice idea as is their Archive programming, effectively producing Disc on Demand offerings from their library. Now, if only they would offer some of those lost and forgotten films also in Blu-ray. Maybe in the future. In the meantime, here’s the press release:

Burbank, Calif., May 6, 2010 – Responding to the extraordinary growth of Blu-ray set-top hardware, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group has expanded its “DVD2Blu” upgrade program. Starting today, consumers can select from 90 of Warner Home Video’s most popular titles to upgrade that include the action-packed “Under Siege” and “Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut” as well as classics from the 1980s including “Risky Business” and “The Lost Boys.”   

According to recently published figures by the Digital Entertainment Group, sales of Blu-ray hardware for the first quarter of 2010 increased by 125 percent over the same period in 2009.  The DVD2Blu program will serve as a great way for new Blu-ray owners to jump start their Blu-ray Disc collections.

Launched in 2009, DVD2Blu.com is a site that allows consumers to upgrade the movies they already own on DVD to Blu-ray Disc™, the absolute best in 1080p high definition picture and sound. The process to upgrade is simple. Consumers select the titles they want to upgrade on DVD2Blu.com, mail in their standard DVDs with pre-paid postage and a short time later receive copies of the same film on Blu-ray Disc. Tim Gunn and the Smurfs? He’ll make it work…

Oh, smurf. First it was Tim Gunn and superheroes, and now he’s working with other comics characters. He’s taking a role Columbia’s new mixed live-action/animated movie The Smurfs in 3D, according to Variety. Gunn will play an executive assistant at a cosmetics company in the movie.

Gunn will also appear in the Sex and the City 2 movie, which comes out later this month. Which may or may not be cartoons as well.

Buh-bye, htmlcomics.com: Illegal site shut down

We noticed htmlcomics.com a while back and its, shall we say, creative interpretation of copyright law before Rich Johnston brought them a bit of extra attention– which, as we were afraid of, spiked their traffic upward even faster than it was going.

So we were pleased to notice their site went down about three weeks back, and even more happy to see the illegal hosting of files is now officially gone:

The FBI has shut
down comic scan site htmlcomics.com and seized its servers in a raid
supported by a consortium of comic publishers, according to an
announcement by Katten Muchen Rosenman, the law firm representing the
publishers consortium.  Marvel, DC, Dark Horse,
Bongo, Archie, Conan Properties, Mirage, and United Media were involved. 

Htmlcomics.com was the
largest site offering scanned American comics, according to the
announcement, with an average of 1.6 million visits a day and over 6.6
million pages of comics from 5,700 series.  The
site was “…producing rampant copyright infringement on a daily basis and
depriving artists and publishers of hard-earned and much-needed
revenue,” according to the publishers’ attorneys.

That said, my rule of black markets apply– there’s no supply if there’s no demand. And comics are still the most expensive entertainment out there. Rich goes after some of the other arguments here.

Batman XXX: The Trailer

When we last left our caped crusaders, they were merely static stalwarts. Trapped in the second dimension, against ghastly typography, word balloons, and credits! But then, in the nick of time, Dale DaBone, err… Batman used his Bat-Trailer Transmogrification Ray to transfer his two-dimensional troop of titillating players from poster to full motion trailer. For those of you not in-the-know, we’re talking about Batman:XXX, A Porn Parody. Flying atomic batteries at full power, this “Vivid Video takes the campy Adam West styled Batman universe and give all of nerds a little chance to see just how much in the tights was the man, and how much was… bat-padding. The costumes are amazingly well done, and we dare you not to marvel at the acting skill that dare we say…. out West’s Adam West! That’s right folks. Same Bat-Porn, new Bat-Porn-Channel. Enjoy the clip below.

And to our utter horror… Alfred IS in the movie. And if you’ve never heard of Hitchcock’s rule of showing a loaded gun on screen (as in… a loaded gun shown is a loaded gun fired before the credits roll…)… Holy Eye-Wash Batman!

Monday Mix-Up: Iron Man Vs. British Charm

As you fine folks try to contain your excitement for the release of a little film by the name of Iron Man 2, we here at ComicMix would like to help you out. It turns out Mr. Stark has been busy promoting his new film in interesting ways, and as such, we want to share with it you. So, grab your Iron Man 2 Slurpee, put the keys down on your new Iron Man 2 Audi R8 Coup , and checkout Ole’ Shellhead doling out some justice on the always punchable Hugh Grant.

This clip is replusariffic. Put on a loop, and enjoy the limey’s face plant on repeat.

‘Iron Man 2’ already has a 100 million dollar weekend

Nikki Finke has the numbers: “Early
overseas estimates from Paramount have Iron Man 2
grossing just over $100 million from 53 markets. And some large
territories haven’t even opened yet, like Germany, Japan,  and China. In
local currencies, the film opened 25% ahead of the original Iron
Man (despite the fact that in those two years both the British pound
and Euro have dropped significantly). IM1 opened at $99
million (that opening also included Germany). The largest opening was
the UK ending the weekend with $12M including previews. Second was Korea
at $11M. Third was Australia at $9M. Fourth was France at $8.5M.”

Nikki goes on to guess at a $155 million opening weekend in America this weekend, with an outside chance of topping
The Dark Knight‘s 3-day record of $158.4 million.

That’s a lot of gold-plating on that armor.
